For the best cause ever, lawmakers from both parties set aside their differences and gathered around therapy animals, adoptable puppies and a champion show dog to celebrate the pets who share their lives.

Pet Night on Capitol Hill, the annual celebration of the human-animal bond, drew lawmakers, their staffers and figures from every corner of the pet care community. The event was co-hosted by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), the American Pet Products Association (APPA), the Pet Food Institute (PFI) and the World Pet Association (WPA), all working to spotlight programs and policies that protect and honor the bond between people and their animals.

Guests got to meet therapy animals from Pet Partners, adoptable kittens and puppies brought by Petco Love, and Canine Companions service dogs still working through their training. Also on hand was Soleil, the 2025 National Dog Show Winner — a very good reminder of why everyone shows up for this event.

"Pet Night is a chance to showcase the bipartisan nature of pets to our nation's lawmakers and the importance of pets as family for individual, community and public health," said Mike Karsting, SVP of the World Pet Association and presenting sponsor of the event.

Steven Feldman, President of HABRI, put it plainly. "There's nothing quite like Pet Night on Capitol Hill; everyone shares their stories about pets that positively impacted their lives," he said. "Pets are a positive force for good."

Elise Fennig, President & CEO of PFI, noted that pet-friendly policies "touch almost every facet of society – from housing to veteran well-being, public health, food safety and more." Truer words were never spoken, right?

The Animal Health Institute (AHI) recognized the top finishers in its Cutest Pets on Capitol Hill contest, an event now in its 18th year that celebrates the most endearing companions owned by lawmakers and the people who work for them. Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL-03), one of the judges, called narrowing the field to three finalists "the toughest vote I've taken all year."

WPA also presented its Legislative Pawsitive Impact Award to Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson (PA-15), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, honoring him for championing the Healthy Dog Importation Act and for guiding the 2026 Farm Bill.

Pet Night is just one night of Pet Week on Capitol Hill, a full seven days of online briefings and in-person meetings that carry a message every pet parent already knows in their heart: our furry family members make us healthier, happier and more connected. It is a good week to remember that the wagging tail waiting at home has a champion in Washington, too.
