A senior dog in Central Florida lost the one piece of equipment that let her function and socialize with the rest of the world when someone stole her custom wheelchair. And soon after, a community of strangers worked to make it right.

Yes, this plucky little Pit Bull named Baby suffers from a debilitating condition that prevents her body from carrying her weight the way it once did. And that means she can no longer walk, jump, or run, and must rely solely on a specialized wheelchair. Oh, as well as the caring support of the wonderful folk at the St. Cloud hospice where she lives.

Now, for any of us with senior pets, we know the importance of keeping them physically and mentally active. Also, the challenges we pet parents face in dealing with the many potty breaks an average dog requires, when they aren't able to stand on their own. Been there, done that.

And with Baby, we're talking about a dog who cannot simply adapt to life without her wheels. She isn't undergoing any form of rehabilitation that will one day correct her disabilities. According to The Pittie Party of Central Florida (PPCF), her condition essentially prevents the affable terrier from even again standing without specialized assistance. And the wheelchair that was stolen had been custom-designed for her body type and needs.

That's what made the theft such a head-scratcher for all involved. As reported by the rescue, the chair that cost roughly $800, was built to meet Baby's exact mobility challenges. Meaning it's unlikely it can even be used for another dog.

Now, the St. Cloud Police Department began investigating immediately after the wheelchair disappeared with the PPCF also jumping in and firing up their social media channels.

Fast forward and this heartless theft that sparked immediate outrage also stirred an outpouring of support from people who had never met the dog. I mean, you gotta love social media, right?

Offers to help began pouring in with some wanting to replace the wheelchair outright and others donating toward Baby's overall care. Ruck9 (Rescuring Uniquely Created K-9's) ultimately stepped forward to deliver exactly what this much-loved Pittie needed. A fully equippped replacement wheelchair that came with one very special, *very *custom feature - a bright pink frame!

With the new wheelchair already secured, the rescue said anyone who donated specifically to replace the chair can request a refund. Remaining donations will go toward Baby's continued care and help the many other hospice dogs the organization supports. That type of help is crucial according the the rescue, because rising costs create financial challenges in caring for dogs with substantial medical and behavioral needs.

While the original wheelchair may never be recovered, the outpouring of support that raised awareness of not just Baby but the organizations that help special needs dogs has created a truly special, highly unique community. I'm thinking kind of like Baby.
