Bringing home a kitten is exciting, but a big commitment too.

Before those tiny paws arrive, a little preparation can help make the transition easier, safer, and much less stressful for everyone.

1. Make Your Home Kitten-Safe

Kittens are naturally curious and will investigate just about everything.

Look around your home from a kitten’s perspective and remove anything they could chew, swallow, knock over, or get tangled in.

Secure loose cords, keep small objects out of reach, and make sure windows and doors are properly closed.

Houseplants are worth checking, too, as some can be toxic to cats.

2. Protect Your Curtains and Furniture

Those tiny claws are adorable, but they can do a surprising amount of damage.

Kittens love to climb, scratch, and explore, so it's worth protecting your furniture and curtains before they arrive.

Provide a few sturdy scratching posts or pads in areas where your kitten is likely to scratch.

Keep curtains tied back initially if your kitten is tempted to climb them, and consider using washable throws or furniture covers on sofas and chairs.

Giving your kitten plenty of appropriate places to scratch and climb can help redirect their attention away from your favorite furnishings.

3. Create a Cozy Safe Space

A new home can feel overwhelming for a kitten. Set up a quiet area where they can retreat when they need some downtime.

Include a comfortable bed or blanket, food and water bowls, and a few toys

Keeping these essentials in one area initially can help your kitten settle in before they explore the rest of the house.

4. Get The Litter Box Set Up

Choose a litter box that's easy for your kitten to get into and place it somewhere quiet and easy to access.

Keep it away from their food and water, and avoid putting it somewhere they'll feel trapped or startled while using it.

If possible, find out what type of litter the kitten has been using and start with that. A familiar smell and texture can make the transition easier.

It also may be wise to put some newspaper down around the litterbox while they’re still getting used to using it.

Final Thoughts

With a little preparation, you can turn your home into a safe, welcoming space for your new kitten.

And once everything is ready, there's only one thing left to do: enjoy those tiny paws and endless kitten zoomies.
