Many cats don’t drink as much water as they should, yet proper hydration plays an important role in supporting kidney function, urinary health, and digestion. Fortunately, there are several practical ways to help your cat drink more water.

1. Increase Moisture Through Food

Wet cat food contains much more moisture than dry kibble and can help to increase daily water intake. You can feed wet food exclusively or combine it with dry food. Some cats will also accept a small amount of warm water mixed into canned food to boost intake.

Any changes to your cat’s diet should be introduced gradually, so they don’t cause digestive upset. You can always double check with a vet if you’re unsure.

2. Offer Fresh, Appealing Water

Cats are sensitive to taste and smell, so their water should be clean and refreshed daily. Bowls should also be washed regularly to prevent odors or build-up. Many cats prefer running water, so a water fountain can help encourage drinking.

3. Pay Attention to Bowl Type and Placement

The style and location of water bowls can affect how much a cat drinks. Wide, shallow bowls help prevent whiskers from touching the sides, which some cats find uncomfortable. Ceramic, stainless steel, or glass bowls are often better choices than plastic.

Water bowls should be placed in quiet areas away from the litter box. Some cats also prefer their water to be separate from their food. Providing multiple water sources around the home gives your cat more opportunities to drink.

4. Monitor Your Cat’s Hydration

Signs of dehydration can include low energy, dry gums, reduced appetite, or infrequent urination. If your cat consistently avoids water or shows sudden changes in drinking habits, it’s wise to consult your vet.

Final Thoughts

Helping your cat drink more water often comes down to small adjustments. Providing fresh water, choosing the right bowls, offering moisture-rich food, and paying attention to your cat’s preferences can all support better hydration.

With consistency and patience, most cats can be encouraged to drink enough water to support their long-term health.
