Shelters All Over the United States Are Full

Animal shelters all over the United States are struggling with too many animals as more people surrender their pets and fewer people are adopting pets.

In California, shelters throughout the state are filled to capacity, and the high number of pets looking for homes today is attributed, at least in part, to the pandemic.

How the Pandemic Affected the Homeless Pet Population

During the pandemic, shelters didn’t have a lot of animals up for adoption, and spaying/neutering services were reduced or even suspended. As a result, dogs and cats were able to breed, even if accidentally, and there are now many homeless animals who are ending up in shelters. In fact, compared to before the pandemic, shelters are filling up more quickly and more often.

Adopting a Pet Today Can Save Their Life

As if a shelter full of homeless pets wasn’t sad enough, another distressing fact is that many shelters euthanize pets when they can’t find homes for them, as they need to make room for the many other animals that end up there.

Bottom line: Shelters in California and around the U.S. are struggling, and many healthy pets are being euthanized because they aren’t finding homes. So, if you are thinking about getting a new pet, definitely adopt, don’t shop, to save a life. But, before you decide to bring a pet home, make sure you’re able to afford caring for them for the rest of their life, as another reason people surrender their pets is because they can’t afford to cover their daily needs and veterinary expenses.
