Freshpet’s online survey was conducted between April and May of 2026, and it involved 1,000 dog parents in the United States.

Dogs and Destiny

49% of the survey’s respondents said that they viewed their dog as their soulmate—romantic partners weren’t considered their ultimate soulmates, but their dogs were. And the dog parents said they felt this way because of a unique emotional understanding with their pets.

Also, 9 in 10 dog parents felt so strongly connected to their dogs that they thought their bond was at the soul level, even considering their companions kindred spirits. And 88% of the people surveyed shared that they felt their bond was part of their destiny, saying they were meant to find their canine companion.

Another interesting finding: pet parents who are fans of astrology may consider their dogs’ astrological signs. 46% of the people surveyed said they know their dog’s astrological sign, and 21% even said that their signs are compatible.

Comfort, Support, and Love

Many dog parents turn to their dogs first for comfort on hard days, and even vent to their dogs to express themselves or talk to their pets about a variety of topics. 50% of the dog parents who stated they were in relationships said they like to talk to their dogs more than their partners on an average day.

Research has already found that pets can be beneficial to your mental health, and it’s hard to deny the unconditional love and loyalty of a canine companion. So, if you’ve been looking for a soul-level connection, it’s worth considering getting a dog, as you might be surprised by the strong bond you can share with them and the joy they can bring to your life.
