5 Things to Keep Well Away From Pets at Summer BBQs

Summer BBQs are a great way to spend time outdoors with family, friends, and even your pets.

But while your dog or cat may love being part of the action, many common BBQ items can be dangerous if they end up in curious paws or mouths.

Here are five things to keep well away from pets during your next summer gathering.

1. BBQ Food Scraps and Leftovers

It can be tempting to share a bite of your burger or a leftover snack, but many BBQ foods are too rich or risky for pets.

Fatty meats, greasy leftovers, and heavily seasoned foods can upset your pet’s stomach and may even lead to more serious problems like pancreatitis in some cases.

Keep plates, leftovers, and dropped food out of reach, and remind guests not to feed pets without checking first.

2. Bones and Corn on the Cob

Cooked bones from ribs, chicken, or other meats can splinter and cause choking, blockages, or internal injuries if swallowed.

Corn can also be dangerous because the cob itself is difficult for pets to digest and may cause an intestinal blockage.

3. Alcohol and BBQ Drinks

Whether it’s a beer, cocktail, or a glass of wine, alcoholic drinks should always be kept away from pets.

Even small amounts can be harmful, causing symptoms such as vomiting, loss of coordination, and breathing problems.

Make sure guests keep drinks on tables or surfaces that pets can’t reach, and clean up any spills quickly.

4. Lighter Fluid, Charcoal, and BBQ Tools

Grills bring a range of hazards beyond food. Lighter fluid, charcoal, and hot BBQ tools can all pose risks to curious pets. Keep these items stored safely before, during, and after cooking.

Remember that a grill can stay hot long after the food is served, so keep pets at a safe distance until everything has cooled down.

5. Skewers, Toothpicks, and Food Packaging

Small items like kebab skewers, toothpicks, wrappers, and string from packaging can be tempting for pets to investigate.

If swallowed, they can cause choking or serious digestive injuries.

Clear the area after eating and make sure rubbish is placed in a secure bin.

Final Thoughts

With a few simple precautions, your pet can still be part of the summer fun.

Set up a safe space with fresh water, shade, and pet-friendly treats so they can enjoy the day without getting into trouble.

A little preparation means you can focus on great food, good company, and making happy summer memories with every member of the family.
