1. Provide a spacious and clean living environment

Guinea pigs need plenty of space to roam, stretch, and explore. Bigger is always better! Ensure your guinea pigs' home has solid flooring (not wire), as their delicate feet are prone to injury.

Clean their space regularly. Aim to spot clean daily and do a full clean at least weekly. Use guinea pig-safe bedding, such as paper-based products or kiln-dried wood shavings, and avoid cedar or pine, which can harm their respiratory systems.

2. Offer a balanced, fresh diet

A guinea pig’s diet should consist of:

  • Unlimited hay (preferably Timothy hay or meadow hay) for digestion and dental health.
  • Daily fresh vegetables like bell peppers, kale, romaine lettuce, and carrots (in moderation).
  • Guinea pig pellets fortified with Vitamin C.
  • Fresh, clean water changed daily.

Guinea pigs can't produce their own Vitamin C, so it's vital to include it in their diet to prevent scurvy. Avoid feeding iceberg lettuce, sugary fruits, or any human food that may be toxic.

3. Give them a companion

Guinea pigs are social animals and thrive in the company of other piggies. Keeping them in pairs or small groups helps reduce loneliness and stress. Just be sure to match them appropriately—two females, two males or a neutered male with a female, are often good combinations but do your research carefully and watch out for any personality clashes.

4. Ensure daily interaction and enrichment

Spending time with your guinea pigs every day helps build trust and keeps them mentally stimulated. Provide toys and tunnels and time outside their cage (in a secure, pig-proofed area) for exercise.

Talk to them softly and handle them gently to help them become comfortable with you. They may be shy at first, but with patience, they’ll often grow to enjoy cuddles and interaction.

5. Keep an eye on their health

Guinea pigs can hide signs of illness, so it's important to keep an eye on their behavior, weight, eating habits, and droppings. Watch for signs of illness such as:

  • Lethargy or hiding more than usual
  • Loss of appetite
  • Labored breathing
  • Lumps, sores, or changes in their coat
  • Runny eyes or nose

Regularly trim their nails, check their teeth (which never stop growing), and schedule vet visits if anything seems off.
