7 Toy Dog Breeds That Stay Tiny and Adorable

Do you find little dogs irresistible? Maybe it’s their compact size or the fact that you can comfortably hold them in your arms. Maybe you’re looking for a dog who will stay small so you can more easily take them wherever you go, or so you can live comfortably with them in a small house or apartment.
Whatever your reason is for your search for tiny dogs, there are a host of toy dog breeds that are sure to fulfill your expectations. Here are just seven of the many adorably small doggies that make awesome pets.
1. Papillon
The French word “papillon” translates to “butterfly,” and it’s the perfect name for this dog because they have ears that look like butterfly wings. They also have long fur and a fluffy tail, and their silky coat is surprisingly easy to maintain.
These dogs grow to be about 8 to 11 inches tall, and only weigh around 5 to 10 pounds, on average. They’re very affectionate, friendly, and curious, and even get along great with kids. Plus, they’re athletic and loads of fun, so they can be active alongside you every day.
2. Yorkshire Terrier
When thinking about toy dog breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier is sure to come to mind. This well-known breed is beloved for good looks and a fun personality. You can let your Yorkie’s coat grow so long that it reaches the ground, or you can trim it regularly to keep it short.
Super cute and small, Yorkies only grow to be roughly 7 to 8 inches tall, and are very easy to carry around because they typically only weigh around 7 pounds. In terms of personality, these energetic dogs love being with people, including kids, and they are protective watchdogs, too.
3. Japanese Chin
The Japanese Chin is another tiny canine with a long and silky coat, including a plumed tail and a mane around their shoulders and neck. When properly groomed, they look like fancy little dogs. Like the Papillon, the Japanese Chin’s coat isn’t hard to maintain.
These dogs reach about 8 to 11 inches in height and weigh around 7 to 11 pounds, on average, as adults. They are affectionate, and they’re great with other dogs. Plus, they’re perfect if you’re looking for a lapdog.
4. Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is another one of the most popular toy dog breeds. These canines are smart, protective, and affectionate. They can look like tiny foxes, especially when the fur is red or orange. And, like other toy dogs, they have a beautiful coat that can be kept long or short.
These ultra-cute dogs really do stay tiny, reaching about 6 to 7 inches in height and weighing only 3 to 7 pounds as adults. Because they’re so small, it’s a good idea to get them pet stairs that will make it easy for them to get on and off furniture like your bed or sofa. A good example is Pettycare Dog Stairs for Small Dogs, featuring high-density foam, a non-slip bottom, and high-quality fleece.
5. Affenpinscher
Affenpinschers are like other toy dogs in the sense that they are confident and brave despite their small size. People even joke that they look like little monkeys and act like humans. But, unlike some other toy breeds on this list, this one has a shaggy, wiry, and dense coat.
The Affenpinscher is a bit taller than some other toy dogs, too, reaching about 9 to 11.5 inches in height, and they weigh an average of 7 to 10 pounds when fully grown. They’re affectionate, fun, and loyal, making wonderful companions for individuals and families.
6. Toy Fox Terrier
If you prefer short-coated toy dogs, the Toy Fox Terrier is a good choice. These dogs are very affectionate and can make good lapdogs. They’re also loads of fun, with plenty of energy combined with a playful and protective demeanor.
As adults, Toy Fox Terriers are, on average, 8.5 to 11.5 inches tall and 4 to 9 pounds. They’re intelligent and easy to train, but they can have a high prey drive that makes them go after other small animals, so that’s something to consider while on walks and if you have other pets.
7. Pekingese
The Pekingese dog breed dates back to ancient China, when these little canines were companions of the ruling class—and they were so small that they were kept in the sleeves of royals. This is another toy breed whose coat can grow long to the floor, with a mane around the shoulders and neck.
Pekingese dogs grow to be roughly 6 to 9 inches tall, so they’re short, but they can weigh up to 14 pounds. They’re protective, making them good watchdogs. Plus, they’re playful and affectionate.
Check Animal Shelters to Find Adoptable Little Dogs
Once you’ve decided that you’re ready to welcome a tiny dog into your family, look for reputable and responsible breeders. But don’t forget to also check local animal shelters and rescue groups, as there will undoubtedly be a variety of small dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds, who are waiting for their forever home.
