For dog lovers preparing that iconic “bucket list” of must-do experiences they can enjoy with the four-legged family member, a visit to the AKC Museum of the Dog should definitely sit close to the top. And that it’s located right downtown in the heart of exciting New York City is the proverbial cherry on top!

No surprise, this unique Museum was the brainchild of the guru of all things dog, the American Kennel Club (AKC), who, back in 1982, launched the dog-centric destination at their Madison Avenue headquarters in New York City. Welcoming the public for five years, it eventually relocated to Missouri, where it remained for the next 30 years before returning to its current Park Avenue address.

Here’s why you’ll want to consider this fascinating excursion an essential part of your next trip to the Big Apple. Let’s start with the fact that there is never a day when programming, including exhibits, workshops, food drives, and other special events, is not taking place. For example, in January, they offered an Art After Hours pastel painting workshop with award-winning artist Karen Muria and her dog Lucy. Yes, the programs are that fun and that creative. You simply can’t pick a bad day to show up (pooch in tow for select events) to celebrate all things dog.

And membership most definitely has its privileges, with free entry to the Museum’s weekly Furry Friday, where owners can bring their dog (or two) to the Museum during set hours. Then there’s the monthly Bark After Dark events that include music and fun activities – always with a “fresh twist” according to the Museum’s website - and a guarantee that no two nights are the same. Most recently, this included a nod to Westminster’s 150th anniversary with their Get Ready for Westminster! themed evening. At that event, owners and their furry housemates were encouraged to dress as their favorite handler/dog duo from this year’s high-profile show… then enjoy a night learning more about the life of a champion show dog.

Now, in addition to their permanent exhibits, which showcase the world’s largest collection of dog-related art and artifacts, they also feature temporary displays to keep their offer fresh and interesting. If you’re all about learning more, you’ll appreciate the monthly meet and mingle that highlights one of the more than 200 different AKC-registered breeds. Attendees get to speak with breed experts, visit with the actual dogs, and learn more about the breed’s history and unique characteristics.

So, if you’re planning a visit to New York City, it’s time to update your checklist: Empire State Building, Central Park, Macy’s, the Museum of Modern Art, and now… the AKC Museum of the Dog. Oh, and bring the pooch!
