Basic Goldfish Care: My 3rd Grader Came Home With What?!

About two weeks ago, I went to pick up my daughter from school. It was a Friday afternoon seemingly like any other.


Except this time, I noticed that she and her friends were carrying something besides their oversized backpacks.


As the title has already revealed, yes, she and her classmates were carrying goldfish!


This came as a complete surprise to me—and, as I later discovered, to the other parents, the school staff and even the principal.

Hundreds of Goldfish 

An external program visiting the school had, for some reason, decided that gifting a goldfish to every pupil was a reasonable idea.


That meant roughly 300 students from first through sixth grade all went home with a fish, regardless of how many siblings from the same family attended the school.


Since most of the children travel home by bus, just imagine the impracticality of that situation.


I couldn’t help wondering how many of those goldfish survived the rocky journey home.

Concerning Containers and No Instructions

The fish were handed out in small plastic boxes with lids and two holes on top. 

They looked more like food-storage containers you might use for a snack than something designed to transport a live animal. It was so concerning!

There were no care instructions in sight. For food, the children received a handful of pebble-like pellets in a non-sealable bag.

Becoming a Goldfish Owner Overnight

This entire goldfish stunt seemed absurd to me. While I’m admittedly more of a dog person (fish kind of gross me out)


I feel sorry for those poor goldfish! I also felt for the children whose new pets may not have survived the night because of the stressful journey home.


Once the initial shock subsided, I began thinking about the practical concerns. As a new and somewhat taken-aback goldfish owner, I had plenty of questions. 


Here are the answers I found, along with tips for giving a goldfish the care it needs to stay healthy and alive.

4. Can a Goldfish Live in a Small Bowl?

Not comfortably. Goldfish produce a surprising amount of waste and need a spacious, filtered tank with room to swim.


A small bowl or plastic container should only be a very temporary solution.

2. Can I Use Water Straight From the Tap?

Tap water should be treated with a water conditioner before the fish is added. This removes chlorine and chloramine, which can harm goldfish.


Try to keep the new water close to the same temperature as the existing water.

3. How Often Should I Feed a Goldfish?

Goldfish generally need a small amount of suitable food once or twice daily. Only offer what the fish can finish quickly, since uneaten food can pollute the water.

4. How Do I Keep the Tank Clean?

Use a filter and perform regular partial water changes rather than replacing all the water at once. A water-testing kit can help you monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels.

Final Thoughts

Goldfish may seem like simple starter pets, but they still require planning, proper equipment and consistent care. 


Handing one to a child without warning puts families, and especially the fish, in an uncomfortable position.

Beyond the obvious cleanliness factor, there is a strong argument to be made for the health and safety of residents. Many pet parents don’t realize that pet waste is not fertilizer. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pet waste is classified as a source of pollution, much like oil or toxic chemicals. It is packed with pathogens, including Salmonella, E. coli, and various parasites like roundworms and hookworms, which can linger in the soil for years. And the risk doesn’t stop at the exact area where the waste was left. Rainwater washes these pathogens into storm drains, which often flow directly into local creeks, rivers, and lakes without being treated. This can contaminate water supplies and harm the delicate local ecosystem. By picking up after our furry friends every single time, we are doing our part to keep everyone safe. Some might view DNA registries as a bit excessive, but supporters of the program argue that it actually encourages landlords to be more pet-friendly. When management has a reliable system in place to ensure that their property stays clean, they are often more willing to allow pets in their rental units. You may think it's as simple as picking up the phone and booking an appointment but deciding when to spay a large-breed female dog like a Labrador Retriever is more complicated than that. A lot more complicated according to Dr. Paola Cuevas, senior in-house veterinarian at Dogster. You see, the timing of a large breed's spaying impacts two different aspects of their health. Spaying her early lowers the chance of mammary tumors, while spaying later gives the skeleton more time to mature. That's why having a full understanding of both the risks and benefits, helps you to better advocate for your pet and make the right decisions when it comes to surgery.Why growth plates matter for large breedsCuevas states that for female dogs, the biggest reason to slow down any type of surgery is about bone development. Estrogen, the hormone produced by the ovaries, helps growth plates close on schedule. These are the soft areas at the ends of her larger bones where growth and lengthening happens. When you remove the ovaries before the skeleton is finished, you prolong growth plate activity and can alter the proportions of the developing bones. And this matters most in large breeds where the skeletal structure matures considerably later than those of small dogs.And research reportedly supports the caution with studies of Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherd Dogs, that were neutered in the first year of life experiencing joint disorders at two to four times the rate seen seen in intact dogs. These findings were most pronounced in dogs neutered before six months of age and included hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tears, and elbow dysplasia.While this evidence does not mean that every early-spayed Labrador will develop orthopedic disease, it does suggest that breeds with a known propensity for these problems, may not be ideal candidates for spaying in their first 12 months.The case for spaying before the first heatFor many - myself included - the concern with later spaying comes down to a potential increased risk of cancer. Spaying before a female's first estrus, or heat cycle, provides the greatest reduction in mammary tumor risk, and that protection shrinks as the number of heat cycles increases. This is why many veterinarians recommend an early spay.It is worth noting where the two risks differ by breed. In female Labrador Retrievers, the research on joint disorders and cancers did not find an increase in the tracked cancers above the rate in intact dogs, unlike female Golden Retrievers, where cancer risk was elevated at any spay age. Waiting a few extra months to spay a Labrador does not mean accepting an inevitable cancer problem.Finding the middle groundFor a large-breed female, many veterinarians recommend a compromise: allow additional skeletal maturation and plan the procedure around 12 to 14 months of age, typically two to three months after the first heat. That's why working to your pet's biological calendar versus your own, is so important. It ultimately comes down to your pet's growth, orthopedic health, household circumstances, and your veterinarian's assessment, rather than a fixed rule of six months or 18 months. And no off-leash walkabouts during this time because the need to avoid accidental breeding is essential.Does laparoscopic surgery change the timing?This type of surgery does not impact the hormonal changes of removing the ovaries. If you're not familiar with laparoscopic ovariectomy, it's a surgical option that removes the ovaries through small incisions versus a full-blown surgery. Because it causes less tissue trauma, it makes for an easier recovery period. Think of it as a gentler surgical route, not a solution to the timing question.Practical next stepsTeam up with your veterinarian to build a plan around your dog's growth that monitors her orthopedic development and prevents pregnancy before surgery. Now, because spayed females can become prone to weight gain fdue to hormonal changes that impact metabolism, ask your vet to help you track her body condition, or learn body condition scoring yourself, so that your large, loveable, four-legged family member maintains her healthy weight and lives her best life.

The word "anesthesia" makes plenty of owners hesitate and for good reason. Putting your furry family member under general anesthetic for dental cleaning sounds like a pretty serious undertaking. And it can be, but for most dogs, anesthesia is a safe and important part of proper dental care and it is what makes a full cleaning possible.Now, you may wonder why your vet would ever need to sedate your dog for dental cleaning. The truth is, regardless of how diligent you've been with a toothbrush, it can't reach below the gumline. And that's where dental disease can hide and cause damage without any outward sign. In fact, about 60% of each tooth lies below the gum line, where bone loss, root resorption, and abscesses take hold. Removing plaque and tartar from that hidden zone, called subgingival scaling, can be done only under anesthesia. And no dog will sit still while sharp instruments work around their mouth, no matter how well-behaved. You should not expect them to.Once your pooch is under anesthesia, the veterinary team can complete a full oral exam, take clear full-mouth X-rays, polish teeth, and control pain. Be honest, if your pet is like mine, there is no chance this could ever be accomplished without sedation. Most importantly, if a tooth is too damaged to save, the dog must be fully anesthetized so the extraction can be performed safely. There is another benefit, too. Anesthesia spares your dog the stress, fear, and pain that could sour every future clinic visit.Now, full sedation of your pooch is never without risk. Dogs may experience drooling, vomiting, grogginess, a drop in body temperature, or changes in heart function, and serious complications like cardiac arrest or death are possible, though rare. The risk climbs for dogs with underlying conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing's disease as well as brahycephalic breeds.That is why veterinarians do not put every dog under without checking first. A pre-anesthetic exam, plus bloodwork, urinalysis, and sometimes chest X-rays or an ECG, identifies concerns before the procedure begins. Monitoring never stops. During the cleaning, a dedicated team member watches heart rate, oxygen, temperature, and blood pressure, and your dog recovers under supervision.Anesthesia-free dentals cost a fraction of the price. But they only scrape visible tartar above the gumline. The AAHA calls the practice unacceptable on safety, efficacy, and ethical grounds. Your dog's teeth may look cleaner. The real disease goes untreated.Most pets develop some dental disease by age three, and untreated disease can reach the heart and kidneys. As AAHA's Emily Singler, VMD, puts it, "the small risk posed by the use of general anesthesia is greatly outweighed by the benefits of maintaining or improving your pet's dental health." So do your part. Keep up routine visits, tell your vet about every medication, and follow post-procedure instructions closely.
