Why? This provides a predictable foundation for both you and your puppy, helping reduce anxiety and promote calmness. By following a consistent daily schedule, you help your puppy understand what to expect, taking the guesswork out of their day and minimizing any confusion or uncertainty.Designate specific areas within your home as your puppy’s “ safe place.” These should be places your puppy can retreat to when feeling overwhelmed. Plus, when paired with careful puppy proofing, they are places you can trust your puppy will be safe and sound. This could be a cozy crate, a designated room with a baby gate, or a comfortable playpen.A strict meal and bathroom schedule is the secret to success when training. By sticking to predictable feeding times and frequent potty breaks, especially after meals, naps, and play sessions, you can minimize accidents in your home and start to create good habits.A consistent schedule will help you establish a sense of order, communicate expectations, and prioritize your puppy’s emotional well-being and development.Potty Training StrategiesAs I just mentioned, frequent potty breaks are essential to successful house training. Establish a consistent schedule for taking your puppy outside right from the beginning and stick with it as closely as possible. This should include bathroom breaks immediately after meals, naps, and play sessions – times when a puppy is most likely to have an accident.When implemented correctly, crate training can be a valuable tool for house training. Plus, the crate is a den or safe space for your puppy. When shopping for a crate, ensure it is appropriately sized (your puppy should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably). Never use the crate as punishment – it should always be treated as a positive space for your pup.Before bringing your puppy home, you should stock up on essential cleaning supplies, such as enzyme cleaners to effectively eliminate messes and prevent future accidents, as well as puppy pads ( disposable or reusable) to protect important spaces in your home (like that newly finished hardwood floor).Always reward your puppy with enthusiastic praise and high-value treats when they go to the bathroom outside. This will help them recognize that going to the bathroom in that designated area is a good thing, encouraging them to continue with this behavior.Socialization and Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement is far more effective than punishment in helping teach your puppy good habits. The first step is identifying what best motivates your puppy. We often associate positive reinforcement with food treats, but this won’t be the best option for every dog. Instead, you may find they are better motivated by verbal praise, a favorite toy, or a belly rub.Avoid punishment-based methods when training, as this can create fear and anxiety. If you run into challenges, don’t hesitate to reach out to a certified dog trainer or behaviorist. Now, you can learn more about your best friend while contributing to groundbreaking research that aims to answer that very question!Researchers at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Maine Cat Lab are conducting the first-ever international study of cat intelligence, and they’re looking for cat parents like you to participate.This one-of-a-kind study, led by psychology professor Karol Maybury and university library manager Bryce Cundick, seeks to better understand cat personalities and smarts on a global scale. Unlike dogs, which have been the subject of numerous intelligence studies, cats have been largely overlooked in this area.“We wanted to see, could we take the same metric that we use or people personality,” Cundick explained. “Does it translate over to cat personality?”The current phase of the study involves a 10-item online questionnaire that explores different aspects of your cat’s intelligence, including memory, problem-solving, attention span, emotional intelligence, and gained knowledge. What it is, is a drying box and they’re being touted as a great alternative to those noisy blow dryers that typically blast out a single jet of hot air. Those hand-held devices are time-consuming when it comes to targeting all those furry little nooks and crannies and can be downright uncomfortable if directed at any one area for too long.The gadget we’re talking about here is not to be confused with dog crate dryers that clip onto your pet’s cage and direct a steady stream of warm air into the crate and around your pet. A drying box is totally sealed. Your pet goes inside and the box then fills with multiple streams of warm air that cover 360 degrees to ensure a full dry. And unlike the crate dryer, you don’t have to worry about your pet moving out of range.What I love is how quietly they operate. Less noise equals less stress in my household. However, whenever you’re talking about heating and pets, there are concerns that pet parents need to consider before using this type of dryer.Even though they have heat settings of up to 99 minutes, never leave your pet for that length of time without having them within your sightline. I think that goes without saying.Always watch your pet’s reaction to being enclosed in this type of dog coat dryer. If he’s panicked, stressed, or panting, get him out. Heat stroke is real and needs immediate attention.This type of device isn’t a smart pick for brachycephalic dogs or those with breathing issues. It’s an enclosed space that heats up quickly and you already know your dog cannot cool himself down efficiently.Only consider drying boxes that allow you to set the temperature and have ventilation for adequate air movement. Stuffy, too warm, and uncomfortable mean your pet will never agree to go into the box again.I’m prone to the options that offer side openings so you can reach in and pet your dog or cat. Vet Pinpoints Common Household Dangers for Pets

No other place feels like home; it’s where our furry companions feel cozy and safe. However, some common household objects can turn a loving home into a danger zone.A second-year emergency and critical care resident at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Shayna Doyle, warns pet parents about common but unsuspecting toxins found in homes and shares tips on how to keep our four-legged friends safe from these potential dangers. Pets, especially cats, are known to be curious and always in the mood to explore every nook and cranny of their homes. Sometimes, unfortunately, these adventures can put a pet’s life in danger. Electrical cords, insect repellent, and certain human medications, including ibuprofen, aspirin, alprazolam, and acetaminophen, among many others, can be dangerous and even fatal to pets. But meds aren’t the only items that can send your beloved pet to the vet. Many pet parents are unaware that common household plants like lilies and Dieffenbachia are very toxic to cats and dogs. Ingesting them can cause kidney damage, heart problems, convulsions, and even death.The kitchen, the place where all cats and dogs want to be, is a true danger zone. Items like coffee, chocolate, alcohol, and peanut butter are toxic to cats and dogs. “A sharp item like an animal bone can poke holes anywhere and everywhere, including in a pet’s mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines,” said Doyle. “They can also get stuck in their jaw or esophagus.”Eating bones can cause blockages in the small intestine, which are often life-threatening and require immediate surgery. While exploring their homes, cats and dogs can come across stray batteries, which contain countless potentially harmful chemicals. Mercury, sulphuric acid, nickel, lead, and cadmium are found even in the smallest batteries and are toxic to pets. “Button batteries, or the flat batteries you might put in a garage door opener, for example, are the worst kind of battery for pets to ingest,” said Doyle. “These batteries generate electrical current on any moist surface, so they can burn through an animal's entire gastrointestinal tract and create extremely severe symptoms.” Keeping an eye on pets as they snoop around the house is the best way to keep them safe from common household toxins. Pet parents should also be aware of their pet’s health and look for signs of poisoning. The most common symptoms of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, wobbly gait, behavioral changes, loss of appetite, and lethargy. “If symptoms are something you’d be worried about in a human child, it’s worth having a pet evaluated by a veterinarian,” Doyle added.
