The American Humane Hero Dog Award was given to a very special Bloodhound named Bo. He works as a Police K9 with the Gastonia Police Department in North Carolina, and has been doing so since 2023.

Originally from Kentucky, Bo was trained to work with police, and has proven himself to be loyal, effective, and courageous. Though he’s under 2 years of age, he has already accomplished a lot, making him worthy of this award.

Bo the Bloodhound’s Accomplishments

Bo is a successful police K9, with several achievements even though he is so young. For example, he has assisted with missing persons cases and has supported the police in finding criminals.

By using his incredible sense of smell and scent tracking abilities, Bo has helped police find several missing people, including an 11-year-old autistic child, a 7-year-old child who’d been taken at knifepoint, and an elderly dementia patient. He even worked in harsh winter conditions to track down an elderly patient who had gone missing.

On top of all of that, Bo has also helped stop criminals by tracking down robbery suspects who were then captured by police. In that particular case, he was successful even though there was a lot of scent contamination, making his job harder.

Many Dogs Were Nominated for This Award

This year marked the 14th annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards, which is a nationwide competition. The Hero Dog title is given to canines who do impressive things, and hundreds of dogs were nominated starting in June.

Nominated dogs are divided into five categories, which are Emerging Hero and Shelter Dogs, Military Dogs, Service and Guide/Hearing Dogs, Therapy Dogs, and Law Enforcement and First Responder Dogs. Bo was in the Law Enforcement and First Responder category.

They narrowed the nominees down to 25 (five for each category), and then down to five. A blue-ribbon judging panel named Bo the Hero Dog for 2024.

Based on Bo’s past accomplishments, it’s clear that he’ll be able to do even more amazing work in the future, and it will be exciting to see what he does.
