Having a Pet Boosts Life Satisfaction Similar to Relationships and Money

A recent study found that having a pet dog or cat can improve your well-being in much the same way that spending time with a spouse or friends benefits you. Researchers also found that, in terms of life satisfaction, having a pet equates to having as much as an extra $90,000 a year.

How is this even possible? How could having a cat or dog be similar to having a spouse or spending time with friends on a regular basis? It’s simple, actually: many pet parents view their animals as family—they talk to them and spend a lot of time with them, whether snuggling on the sofa at the end of a hard day or going out on a fun hike together, just like they would do with a spouse or friend.

A Collection of Data Revealed a Lot About People and Their Pets

Experts used a survey of 2,500 British households to collect data about people and their pets and whether or not having pets actually caused an increase in well-being and life satisfaction. Using an instrumental variables approach, they wanted to go beyond what other researchers have found thus far about the benefits of pets.

In the end, this study suggests that, yes, a boost in life satisfaction is connected to having pets. On a scale of 1 to 7, owning a dog or cat can increase life satisfaction by three to four points.

Pets help people stay more active, and help reduce stress and improve mood and mental health. The results of this research aren’t all that surprising to a lot of people, such as those who celebrate holidays with their pets. And ongoing research into the human-animal bond is sure to reveal even more about the myriad benefits that come with pet parenting.
