Making homemade meals for dogs is an option for pet parents who want to have more control over the ingredients in their pet’s diet. Unfortunately, a recent study discovered that a lot of home-prepared meals are lacking in the key nutrients that dogs need.

For this study, researchers looked at 1,726 homemade diets to check if they were nutritionally complete. Using an open-ended survey, they collected diet information from dog parents.

Then, ingredient information for each recipe was entered into Balance It, which is a digital tool that is FDA and AAFCO compliant for canine nutrition recommendations, and which can help people make nutritionally complete dog diets.

Experts discovered that a very small percentage of those diets were nutritionally complete. More specifically, they determined that 6% or less of the homemade diets were potentially nutritionally complete.

Diverse Ingredients, but Lack of Nutrients

The home-prepared diets featured a variety of ingredients, like meat, organs, fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, and oils. And 45% of people said they added a commercially prepared diet or base/topper, too. Yet, the recipes still didn’t meet guidelines for being properly nutritionally balanced.

Too many homemade diets are either unbalanced or partially balanced, and imbalances could have an impact on a dog’s health. So, if you want to feed your dog a homemade diet, it’s important to work closely with a veterinarian and veterinary nutritionist. They can come up with a proper diet that is complete and balanced for your dog based on factors like their age, breed, health, and activity level.

Homemade diets need to include the right fresh ingredients, along with the appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements. Doing this correctly on your own can be very difficult, but an expert can provide the guidance you need. Once you have homemade recipes that are just right for your dog, follow those instructions to ensure every meal is completely balanced and full of the nutrition your companion requires.
