How to Help a Stray Cat

Coming across a stray cat can be a confusing experience. Sometimes it’s obvious that it’s a stray, other times, you might be wondering if it’s just lost or exploring.

Here are some tips on how to know whether or not the cat you’ve found is a stray and what you can do to help it.

1. Be Sure the Cat is Definitely a Stray

Check for signs of an owner, such as a collar and ID tag, though collars can sometimes slip off.

A cat that’s skittish, hides, or runs away is more likely to be a stray. If this is the case, approach them carefully and slowly.

Pay attention to its physical condition, too—a clean coat and healthy weight often mean it’s being cared for by an owner, while visible injuries, matted fur, or a thin frame can signal trouble.

2. Contain the Cat

If the cat appears sick, injured, or in immediate danger, it’s best to secure it so you can get help. A sturdy carrier is ideal, but a well-ventilated box will work in an emergency.

If you have to handle the cat, wear gloves or gently wrap it in a towel to protect yourself from scratches or bites.

3. Provide Short-Term Care

If you’re looking after the cat for a while, give it a safe, quiet room away from other pets. Offer fresh water, food, and a litter box.

4. Check for a Microchip

Even if the cat has no collar, it may still have a microchip that can identify the owner. Most veterinary clinics and animal shelters will scan a found cat for free. If a chip is found, they can contact the owner on your behalf.

5. Post on Social Media

Put a post out on social media to try to locate the owner. Even if they don't see it themselves, someone they know might send it their way.

6. Decide on the Next Step

After a good-faith effort to find the owner, you can then choose to adopt, foster, or work with a rescue group to rehome the cat.

Helping a cat in need is a truly rewarding experience. Just make sure that they’re definitely in need of your help first!
