How to Safely Stop a Dog Attack: 5 Critical Steps to Protect Your Pet
A few years ago, my dog Charlie was repeatedly attacked by two different neighbors’ dogs, both while we were on leashed walks and even when she was tied in our own yard.
Once, one of these aggressive dogs even jumped out of a moving car and ran up the hill to our house to attack her!
Those moments were scary, frustrating, and upsetting for me, and I’m sure they were frightening for Charlie, too.
After that, I started looking into dog safety tips that could help in the moment if another dog becomes aggressive.
These are ideas I hope you never need, but if you do, they may help you stay calmer and protect your pet as safely as possible.

1. Stay Back and Call for Help
Take a breath, shout for the other owner, and ask nearby adults to help clear space. Do not let children, crowds, or other pets move closer, since extra noise and movement can make the situation more chaotic.
2. Don’t Grab Collars or Reach Near Heads
Your first instinct may be to pull the dogs apart by their collars, but this can put your hands close to their mouths. In the middle of a fight, even your own dog may bite accidentally because they are scared, hurt, or overstimulated.
3. Use a Barrier or Distraction
Look for something nearby that can interrupt the fight without using your body. A jacket, backpack, chair, trash can lid, board, stroller, or large bag may help block the dogs’ view of each other.
If you have access to water, a loud noise, or another safe distraction, use it from the side rather than stepping between the dogs.
If dog attacks happen in your yard, a retractable hose can be a safe distraction to help separate the pets. This retractable garden hose reel is durable, comes in different size options and is designed to prevent kinks and tangles.

4. Try the Wheelbarrow Method Only With Another Adult
If the dogs will not separate and two adults are available, each person can approach one dog from behind, lift the dog’s back legs like a wheelbarrow, and back away in a wide arc.
This method still carries risk, so avoid it if you are alone, physically unable to control the dog, or unsure whether you can move safely.
5. Separate First, Then Check Injuries
Once the dogs are apart, move your dog behind a fence, into a car, through a gate, or far away from the other dog before checking them.
Look for bleeding, limping, swelling, shaking, puncture wounds, tenderness, or changes in breathing or behavior. Call your vet right away if you see any injury or if your dog seems painful, frightened, or not like themselves.
Final Thoughts
Dog safety starts with staying alert, but even careful owners can face scary situations.
After a dog attack, keep the animals apart, get veterinary help when needed, and document what happened once everyone is safe.
