This year’s National Dog Show took place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania on November 28, and just like every year, it was a special event featuring many talented canines. But what made this year’s event even more noteworthy was the fact that a Pug was named Best in Show.

Vito the Pug from North Carolina is now famous and making headlines, as he beat 1,940 other dogs and became the first pug to win this contest since 2002 when it was televised for the first time.

The Path to Best in Show

First, Vito won the Toy Group contest, which had 24 breeds. Then, he beat a total of six other group winners—a Berger Picard, Giant Schnauzer, Clumber Spaniel, Ibizan Hound, Lhasa Apso, and Welsh Terrier—to become the Best in Show. Verde the Welsh Terrier came in second place behind Vito.

Dogs that compete in the National Dog Show are assessed by judges who score them based on how well they conform to breed standards when it comes to structure, temperament, and appearance. The judges found that Vito embodies all of the features that a Pug should exhibit, which is why he came out on top.

A Pug with a History of Winning

Vito, who is only 2.5 years old, made history with his co-owner, Carolyn Koch, who shared how proud she is of him and his accomplishment. But this wasn’t the first time that Vito won prestigious canine contests. He has 25 best-in-show awards, and won Best of Breed at both the 2024 Westminster Dog Show and 2023 AKC National Show.

This year’s 92nd annual National Dog Show was part of an annual Thanksgiving tradition that includes the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and people were able to tune in to see all of the dogs compete. In 2023, the Best in Show award went to a Sealyham Terrier named Stache.
