Watch This Bulldog Get "Lost" at Dad’s Office and Try Not to Laugh
We all have those moments when we look at our dogs and wonder what exactly is going on behind their expressive eyes. For some, it’s a curiosity about their surprising intelligence. For others, it’s a little more comical.
For one English Bulldog named Henry, a normal day accompanying his dad to the office revealed a new level of adorable confusion.
In a social media video that went viral, capturing the hearts of dog lovers around the world, Henry managed to get completely lost. The catch? He was right outside his dad’s open office door. The video shows Henry wandering back and forth in the hallway, looking utterly confused. Despite his dad repeatedly calling his name from just a few feet away, Henry simply could not figure out where the sound was coming from.
The internet fell in love, which comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the cute video. Commenters joked that Henry’s GPS was still loading and that his survival skills were a solid zero out of ten, though his cuteness easily scored a perfect ten.
The moment his dad finally stood up and stepped into view, the sheer relief on the pup’s face was unmistakable (as was his love for his dad).
While the video is hilarious, it highlights a very real aspect of caring for aging pets. Henry is ten years old. In the video, his dad calls him “geographically challenged” but also notes that a change in hearing may be the real culprit.
Watching our pets age means learning to recognize the subtle changes that come with this next chapter of their life. For dogs, age-related hearing loss is very common. It happens gradually as the nerves within the inner ear degenerate, stopping the ear from processing sound vibrations the way it did when your dog was younger.
Because this change is gradual, older dogs often adapt to their “new normal,” hiding the condition until a confusing situation occurs.
You may notice your senior pup failing to greet you at the door when you come home as they normally would, sleeping through loud noises like thunderstorms, or (like Henry) finding it difficult to locate specific sounds. When a dog is faced with hearing loss, they can often still hear that a sound is happening; they just lose the ability to pinpoint exactly which direction it is coming from.
If you suspect your pup is experiencing a loss of hearing, there are still ways you can give them an incredible quality of life with a few small changes. Start training using hand signals for basic commands like sit, stay, and come. You can also use vibrational cues, like gently tapping your foot on the floor when you walk into a room, to avoid startling your pup.
As for Henry, he eventually found his way back to his dad’s side. It’s a good reminder that even when our senior pups experience a few bumps in the road (and they inevitably will), their ability to bring love and joy remains completely untouched!
