Dog Coat Colors

Dogs come in multiple colors ranging from pure black to pure white. While some dog breeds are known for only coming in certain colors, other breeds have a wider range of colors that they can showcase. And when it comes to mixed breed pooches, there are even more possibilities because of their genetics.

Here’s a list of some of the many dog coat colors, but bear in mind that dogs can also feature varying shades of the following as well.

Dog Coat Patterns

In addition to their beautiful colors, dogs can have coats that boast eye-catching patterns. Here are some of the coat patterns seen across the many dog breeds.

Solid

Dogs that have a solid colored coat will have just one color all over their body. There won’t be any additional colors, and there won’t be any patterning in the coat. A good example is the Labrador Retriever, who can have a black, chocolate, or yellow coat.

Bicolor

When a dog has a bicolor coat, it means they have two colors. For example, a dog might be tan and white or black and white. A good example of a bicolor breed is the Rottweiler, who can be black and rust, black and mahogany, or black and tan.

Tricolor

If a dog has three colors, they have a tricolor coat, and each dog can be unique in their patterning. An example is the Entlebucher Mountain Dog, who can have a coat that’s black, white, and tan or black, white, and yellow.

Spotted

As the name implies, a dog with a spotted coat will have spots of color. Their body will be mostly white but there will be small spots of another color, such as black or brown. A well-known example of a spotted dog breed is the Dalmatian, with their white coat that can have spots in black, liver brown, orange, or lemon.

Harlequin

With the harlequin coat pattern, a dog will have a white coat and larger spots or splotches of black. The Great Dane is the dog breed that can have this unique appearance.

Piebald

A piebald coat pattern is recognizable by its white patches, which are asymmetrical and irregular in shape, alongside another color. An example of the many breeds that can showcase this pattern is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Brindle

A dog with a brindle coat will have subtle tiger striping, creating a mix of colors throughout the fur. Colors can include black, tan, red, brown, and blue. For instance, the coat might be red with black stripes. An example is the Boxer.

Roan

Roan is a pattern that includes white hairs throughout the base color, making a dog appear lighter. An example of a breed that can have this standout coat pattern is the Australian Cattle Dog.

Ticked

With a ticked coat (also referred to as flecked), a dog will have a white coat with flecks of another color. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a dog breed that can have this attractive look.

Sable

If a dog has a sable coat, the tips of the hairs will be darker than the base of the hairs. For example, a dog might have a light brown coat with black tips on the hairs. One of the dog breeds that can have a sable coat is the German Shepherd.

Merle

Merle is also referred to as the dapple pattern. Darker and irregular patches of color are combined with a lighter hue of the same color, and there can be areas of white fur too. For example, a red merle coat will be a combination of tan and brown, while a blue merle coat will be gray and black. The Australian Shepherd is a great example of a dog with the merle pattern.

Brushing Your Dog: A Guide for All Coat Types

Give your dog the brush off… with the right kind of brushing for his coat type Brushing your dog might seem fairly straight forward, but there’s more to it than first meets the eye. The exact brushing routine that you should give your dog depends on the type of coat he has, so you need to be ready to cater to his specific needs. It’s important that you have a regular brushing routine in place for your dog, because it not only keeps his coat healthy, but can also make a big difference to the health of his skin. Take note of the different brushing routines necessary for different kinds of dogs and your pooch will thank you. Short, Smooth-Coated Dogs Some people think it’s not necessary to brush a dog with a short, smooth coat, but this is untrue. Sure, your short-haired pooch might not get matted or tangled, but he still sheds. Plus, brushing your dog is great for his skin. To brush a short, smooth coated dog, you’ll need a bristle brush (synthetic is fine, it doesn’t have to be real bristles) with bristles that are fairly short and tightly packed. You’ll really only need to brush your short haired dog once or twice each week. Brush him all over, with firm yet gentle strokes of the bristle brush. Short, Wiry-Coated Dogs Dogs such as certain types of terrier can have short, wiry coats. They tend to be slightly longer than smooth coats and are more prone to tangling. While a firm bristle brush is useful for dogs with these types of coats, you may also find it useful to use a slicker brush, which is a type with thin, flexible metal pins. This will make it easier to work through any tangles that might occur. You should brush a wire-coated dog slightly more regularly than a short, smooth coated dog – ideally two to three times per week. Medium-Coated Dogs Dogs with medium length coats generally need to be brushed every other day, but ones with softer smoother coats may be more prone to tangles than pooches with harsher fur. A wire pin brush is the ideal kind to use to get through the longer hairs, but you may also have some success using a bristle brush, which has long, soft bristles, as this will work through the coat quite nicely. You should also use a slicker brush on any mats that appear, though if you get to them quickly, they shouldn’t be hard to work out. Long-Coated Dogs You have to be brave to own a truly long-coated dog, as they require a look or care and maintenance. In an ideal world, you should be grooming a long-haired dog for at least 5 to 10 minutes each day, to remove and help prevent any tangles. A wire pin brush and a comb are going to be the main weapons in your arsenal. When brushing through your dog’s coat, pay particular attention to the areas which are prone to matting, which include the elbows, behind the ears, between the legs, the tummy and around the base of the tail. Curly-Coated Dogs Some dogs with curly coats, such as Poodles and Bedlington terriers, don’t shed very well on their own. The hairs fall out from their roots, but get stuck in the coat and can easily form mats. The only way to prevent these mats from forming when these kinds of dogs have a full, natural coat, is to make sure your groom them daily. A slicker brush and a shedding blade are going to be most helpful for grooming a curly coated dog. You should brush a pooch with this kind of fur daily or at least every other day.

Can Dogs Suffer From Acid Reflux?

Do you ever find yourself reaching for the antacids after a particularly rich or zesty meal, as that familiar burn creeps up in your chest? It’s a sensation many of us know all too well. But what I told you that your dog can experience a similar discomfort? It might surprise you to learn that acid reflux isn’t just a human struggle. It’s a genuine concern for our pups, too! If you’ve ever wondered if your dog could be suffering in silence, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, I will break down the basics of canine acid reflux, helping you understand why it happens, how to recognize the warning signs, and most importantly, what you can do to bring your pup some much-needed relief. Understanding the Canine Digestive SystemTo truly understand acid reflux in dogs, we have to start by familiarizing ourselves with their digestive system. Think of the esophagus as a busy one-way passage, carrying food from the mouth down to their stomach. Now, at the end of this passage, right where it meets the stomach, there’s a small muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This LES acts like a gatekeeper, opening up to allow food to pass into the stomach and closing tightly to prevent anything from backing up. Once the food makes its way into the stomach, it enters a highly acidic environment. This strong acid plays an essential role in breaking down food particles, preparing them for the following stages of digestion. When everything is working as it should, the LES carefully contains that acid where it belongs – in the stomach. How Does Acid Reflux Happen in Dogs? So, if there are systems in place to keep this acid contained, how does this backflow of stomach acid happen? Several key mechanisms could contribute to acid reflux. This includes: LES Dysfunction: When the LES doesn’t close properly or is weakened, it allows the acidic stomach contents to flow backward into the esophagus, causing irritation. Increased Abdominal Pressure: Excessive pressure on the stomach can force its contents upward, even past a healthy LES. This can be caused by obesity or a very full stomach. Delayed Gastric Emptying: When food stays in the stomach longer than usual, the risk of stomach acid backing up into the esophagus increases. Hiatal Hernia: A less common issue where a portion of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm (the muscles separating the chest and abdomen). This can weaken the LES and make acid reflux more likely. Beyond these mechanisms, there are several everyday factors that can increase the risk of your dog experiencing acid reflux. The more of these factors that come into play, the greater the risk will be. Dietary IssuesFoods high in fat can delay the stomach from emptying, giving acid more time to potentially back up. Surprisingly, even seemingly harmless treats that are spicy or acidic can irritate the esophagus or stomach lining. This includes “treats” your dog may snag without permission, like human food stolen off the table or goodies they discover in the garbage can.Sudden changes in your dog’s diet can also upset their digestive system and lead to temporary reflux. Furthermore, food sensitivities or allergies can cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, potentially contributing to the problem. Don’t forget those overly enthusiastic eaters (my dog being among them). Dogs who gulp down their food too quickly often swallow a lot of air, which can increase pressure in their stomach. ObesityAnother significant risk factor (of acid reflux and several other medical complications) is obesity. The excess weight puts additional pressure on the abdomen, which makes it more likely that the LES will fail. Medications Certain medications can also have the side effect of relaxing the LES, increasing the chance of acid backflow. Underlying Medical ConditionsRegardless of the cause, chronic vomiting can irritate the esophagus and predispose a dog to reflux. Gastritis, or inflammation of the stomach lining, can disrupt your dog’s normal digestive function. In some cases, a condition called megaesophagus occurs, where the esophagus is enlarged and loses the ability to move food into the stomach. This can lead to regurgitation, which can be mistaken for or contribute to acid reflux. This is a medical condition that will require lifelong management. Finally, some breeds, particularly brachycephalic breeds (those with short faces like Bulldogs and Pugs), may be more prone to reflux due to altered airway pressure, which can affect their digestive system. Late-Night Eating This is a commonly discussed problem among humans, but could also contribute to your dog’s problems. Eating late at night, especially a large meal right before bedtime, can increase the risk of acid reflux as your dog lies down soon after eating. This body position makes it easier for stomach contents to flow backward. Spotting the Signs of Acid Reflux It’s important to remember that the signs of acid reflux in dogs can vary quite a bit from one pup to another, both in how intense they are and how often they occur. By being a careful observer of your dog’s behavior and taking note of any changes or “odd” behaviors, you are far more likely to catch these clues: Regurgitation: Have you ever seen your dog just “release” a bit of undigested food without the effort often associated with actual vomiting, like heaving or tummy action? That’s usually regurgitation, a key sign of potential reflux. Vomiting: Of course, sometimes they might actually vomit, complete with heaving and retching. While vomiting can have lots of causes, it can also be linked to acid reflux or related tummy problems. Excessive Drooling: Dogs drool, some breeds more than others. However, you should keep an eye out for extra slobber. If your dog is suddenly producing way more drool than usual, it could be their body’s way of trying to soothe an irritated esophagus from the stomach acid. Lip Licking and Swallowing: This can be a more subtle clue that many dog parents will miss. If you notice your dog constantly licking their lips or swallowing more than usual, it may indicate some discomfort or that they are feeling nauseous. Coughing or Gagging After Eating: Does your dog cough or gag a bit right after eating or when trying to settle down for a nap? That could be the reflux acting up and triggering those reactions. Picky Eating or Loss of Appetite: If your dog, who usually gobbles down everything, starts turning their nose up at food, it could be because their stomach is feeling off, possibly due to reflux. Unexplained Weight Loss: In more persistent cases, if the reflux makes them eat less or frequently bring their food back up, you may notice them losing weight. Restlessness or Discomfort: Does your dog seem agitated after eating? Do they pace or whine after their meals? They could be feeling that uncomfortable burn. Bad Breath: That not-so-pleasant breath could actually be a sign of acidic stomach contents making their way back up where they shouldn’t be. Burping or Flatulence: An increase in burping or passing gas can sometimes be linked to more air in the digestive system, which can be associated with acid reflux. As a loving and responsible dog parent, you are the best person to notice subtle changes in your dog’s behavior. Keeping a mental or even written note of when these signs occur, what your dog was doing before the behavior, and any patterns you observe (like after certain foods or at specific times of day) can be incredibly helpful information to share with your veterinarian.

Cats and dogs can get the same allergies as people do, and also be allergic to pests, like fleas. There is no recent data on how many pets have allergies, but research shows the problem is escalating. “I probably see allergic dogs and cats every single day, probably multiple times a day,” said Dr. Karen Woodard, medical director at Thrive Pet Healthcare-Elmhurst in Illinois. According to Woodard, 90% of pets have environmental allergies, and the rest suffer only from food allergies. Certain dog breeds, like terriers, boxers, and bulldogs, are more prone to allergies. When it comes to cats, breeds like Persians, Himalayas, and Siamese are more at risk of developing allergies.Our four-legged companions can be allergic to other animals as well. No one wants to see their beloved pet suffer, and luckily, there are ways you can help your furry companion deal with allergies.The first step is diagnosis. This often involves allergy testing or an elimination diet, which consists of feeding limited-ingredient foods, in case your vet suspects food allergies. There are various medications, like anti-inflammatory drugs and oral and injectable medications that block chemical signals associated with itchiness in dogs, if testing shows your pet suffers from environmental allergies. Food allergies are usually treated with special diets, like hydrolyzed food, in which proteins are chemically broken down into smaller pieces that won’t trigger a reaction. This heavy workload can lead to higher blood pressure and, over time, can lead to the development of serious heart conditions, diminishing their cardiovascular health, and potentially shortening their lifespan.Respiratory Problems Just like humans, excess fat in cats can accumulate around their chest and abdomen, restricting the ability of their lungs to expand effectively. This can make breathing difficult, especially during activity or in warm temperatures. Deaf Rescue Dog Finds New Role on the Family Farm

For many new rescue pet parents, the joy of welcoming an animal into their lives comes with the hope of companionship and connection. But what happens when a beloved pet faces a significant challenge in their new home? One heartwarming story out of Arizona is capturing the attention of animal loves across the globe, showcasing the incredible adaptability and loving nature of a deaf rescue dog who, after a little time and adjustment, found a unique and vital role on the family farm. Evie, a deaf Pitbull, was rescued by Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue after a difficult start to life. Farm owner Allison Thomison initially fostered the eight-week-old pup but soon realized that Evie had no intention of leaving – she was destined to stay. However, being completely deaf presented some initial hurdles when adapting to farm life. As Thomison shared, “I used to say that she served no purpose on the farm as she would dig holes in my garden, escape the fence to befriend the neighbor’s donkeys, swim in the cow water trough, and cause general happy havoc.” Essentially, her new dog parents viewed her as “purely ornamental,” often more of a playful disruptor than a helper. The storm season officially starts on June 1 and lasts till November 30, but storms may also occur before or after these dates.Last year’s hurricane season has devastated communities with flooding, mudslides, and wind, causing billions of dollars in damage and leaving thousands of people without a home. According to the American Veterinary Association, 45.5% of U.S. households own at least one dog, and 32.1% have at least one cat. An estimated 89.7 million dogs and 73.8 million cats are kept as pets in the United States, and all of them face the same risks during the hurricane season as their owners. The United States Department of Homeland Security has created a website to help people prepare for natural disasters and emergencies. There you can find a list of items people should have prepared in case of an emergency. A basic disaster supply kit should contain food, water, flashlights, cash, personal hygiene items, cell phone chargers, and prescription medication, among other things. But what about our dogs and cats? Is there any way to include them in your family’s emergency plan, and if you have to evacuate, can they be taken to safety as well?“Sometimes it’s much more challenging to get certain things when you’re in a hurry,” said Sarah Cortright, a Southern California-based small animal veterinarian. Packing a pet’s vaccination records, medication, food, and other necessities is much harder when trying to escape a deadly storm. It’s essential to have all these things prepared. Make sure you have at least two weeks' worth of your pet’s prescription medication in case you are forced to stay away from home for an extended period. Remember that veterinary offices may also stay closed because of severe weather, making it impossible to refill prescriptions quickly or obtain your pet’s vaccination or medical records.“Coming out of L.A. fires, we saw a lot of pets that needed medications, and they had no documentation,” making it difficult for veterinarians to refill scripts, explained Cortright.
