American Kennel Club Releases Top Breeds for 2024

And we take a peek at those that came in dead last. Are we now off hunting breeds?
Amongst the doggie set, this announcement is as highly anticipated as the Oscar nod each February. And while there’s never a winner or loser when it comes to ranking the popularity of breeds, it’s an interesting exercise in testing the pulse of the pet-loving community.
Boasting 202 different breeds, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world and the only registry in the United States that maintains systematic inspections and investigations. It’s by using these registration stats that they’re able to rank the most popular breeds each year – including last year’s 2024 roster! And while we would never call those dogs that land within the 191 thru 201 range the least popular, they do have a way to go before they catch up with those top-named breeds.
Ready?
Yet again, the French Bulldog comes in as the number one favorite breed in the United States. Compact in size, playful, great with kids and other dogs, the Frenchie seemed to really gain momentum post-2021 when it nudged the Labrador Retriever out of the top spot – a title he had held for a whopping 31 years. Hmmm… maybe it was the plight of being housebound during the pandemic that resulted in pet owners scaling down.
That said, still, nipping closely at his heels is the gentle Labrador Retriever, followed by the Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog and in fifth spot, the Poodle. If you want to dig a little further, the pint-sized Dachshund, loyal Beagle, imposing Rottweiler, Bulldog, and German Shorthaired Pointer round out the top 10. So, quite a mixed bag when it comes to theme-spotting. I mean, we’re now seeing quite a range of sizes, energy levels, and maintenance requirements.
So, who landed on the bottom rungs? The stately Sloughi sighthound, the pint-sized yet high-energy Norwegian Lundehund, the eager-to-please Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen hound, the iconic Bergamasco Sheepdog with its thick, corded coat, and the highly independent English Foxhound. In short, the not-so-common-breeds that might explain their less than shining performance in this ranking.
Most fun of all - which breeds are gaining ground and may be serious contenders in future registry rankings? Watch for everyone’s favorite redhead, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who moved from 83rd spot back in 2023 to 69th in 2024. Also, the grumpy-looking Brussels Griffon climbed from the 92nd most popular breed in 2023 to claim spot 84.
But for those whose pets don’t necessarily have a pedigree, what about those fun-loving mixed breeds flying around the dog parks? Which of the myriad designer dogs (as they’ve become known) score top marks for popularity? No surprise the winning combos seems to be a bit of all of the most popular AKC breeds. We’re seeing Labradoodles and Goldendoodles that incorporate Poodles and either Labrador Retrievers or Golden Retrievers. Also, Bulladors and Beabulls where Bulldogs are bred, again with Labrador Retrievers or Beagles for a unique dog that showcases the best of both breeds. In our world? No pedigree... No problem!
