For loving pet parents the world over, the report of a dog abandoned at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas was unconscionable. I mean, I panic if I lose sight of one of my fur crew at the dog park… never mind intentionally walking away from them in a busy, noisy public space with no familiar faces or modes of comfort.

But that’s what happened to one gorgeous little two-year-old Golden Doodle. Video footage shows a happy little pooch excitedly circling his owner in anticipation of a fun new adventure. If he only knew! We watch as his owner attempts to check in at the JetBlue ticket counter with the dog in tow. Apparently, she planned to travel with him as her service dog; however, airline staff advised that she needed to have done some prework that included completing online documentation and presenting the paperwork at check-in. This was never done, so the dog’s owner was denied a boarding pass.

And that’s when wee Jet Blue (aptly named for the airline) was secured to the baggage sizer beside the check-in desk and left behind while his owner proceeded over to the departure gate.

Once employees at the ticket desk realized the dog had, in fact, been abandoned, they summoned the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), who were quick to track the errant owner, who was still at the airport, presenting her with the video evidence. She claimed the dog had a tracking device and assumed that leaving him behind was okay because he could be identified and ultimately returned to her. So, a convenient way to circumvent the service dog travel requirements with no regard for the stress this would cause her pet.

Not so! Unimpressed, police continued questioning, which resulted in the situation becoming “hostile” and the owner ultimately arrested and charged with animal abandonment and resisting arrest.

Now, here’s where the story takes a heartwarming turn. The cute little Golden Doodle (aptly dubbed JetBlue) was placed with Animal Protective Services and held for 10 days before being transferred to a local rescue organization. At that point, he went up for adoption, and when word spread, more than 2,400 wannabe pet parents put their names forward as possible adopters.

As luck would have it, one of the police officers involved in the case had previously submitted an application to adopt a dog from the same rescue that was keeping wee JetBlue safe. He had already had the required home inspection, been approved, and was waiting for that “just right” dog to make an appearance. And that was JetBlue which became a member of his household on February 21st.

The shelter - Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas – is using the opportunity to remind all prospective adopters that although JetBlue has found his forever home, many are still waiting. Perhaps one may be a match for them.
