Raccoon Jimothy's Short Spine Syndrome Can Also Occur in Dogs

The Seattle-based mini media sensation has us curious about what's causing that hunchback and does it happen in dogs? The short answer is yes!

Even if you claim your relationship with social media is nothing more than a passing glance from time to time, you’d be hard-pressed not to have seen the Instagram post that’s now gone viral because of one oddly shaped little raccoon. Affectionately dubbed Jimothy, the little guy is seen running across a field and up some stairs in a body that, quite frankly, resembles a cartoon character. Or something that would probably scare you silly if you crossed his path at night.


Now, with over a million views and more than 450,000 comments, it’s no surprise that his condition was quickly identified as something called “short spine syndrome”. In dogs, it’s considered a genetic blip that results in a short, compact body with no visible neck. And while rare, it has been documented as far back as the 1600s from a painting by Swedish artist David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl entitled the “Deformed Dog”.


What is Short Spine Syndrome

In short (no pun intended), it takes place in utero and prevents the vertebrae from fully developing – hence, the distorted, hunched appearance. Because the animal’s head and legs continue to be normal-sized with the body significantly shorter, the organs are understandably cramped and this can cause mobility issues which, in the wild, mean a much shorter life span or even a chance for survival.


Now, our little buddy Jimothy seems to be motoring along quite nicely in the video clip. And that leads us to an observation made by Neuroscientist Kelly Lambert from the University of Richmond. She studies raccoons and rats, and what impressed her was that Jimothy’s mother must have chosen to nurture her deformed kit rather than abandon it. An impressive move given that in the wild, up to 50% of newborn kits die before ever leaving their den. Let alone one that is visibly challenged.


Can Dogs Survive Short-Spine Syndrome?

Lambert notes that while it would be understandable for a dog born with short spine syndrome to survive under the close care of his pet parents, an animal in the wild is something else. Not only would it be vulnerable to predators, but simply trying to forage for food and shelter would be a challenge. That said, studies show that raccoons have extremely high neuron densities that translate into characteristics and behaviors closer to those of a primate and would have helped Jimothy survive despite his deformity. And then there are those hand-like paws that are highly dexterous and, similar to humans, are linked to a large section of the brain’s motor cortex.


In fact, Toronto, Canada can attest to this after having invested more than $31 million CAD in raccoon-proof garbage cans back in 2016. The goal? To help keep these furry little bandits out of the trash cans of frustrated residents.


But in Lambert’s opinion, the most interesting aspect of Jimothy’s story is twofold: his astonishing ability to adapt his survival skills to suit an imperfect body, and the devotion of his mother to caring for her offspring and turning him into a little survivor.
