Many articles have been published about the benefits of pets on mental health and overall happiness, but they’re usually focused on the perks of sharing your home with a cat or dog. Well, the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) wants to change that. They announced a grant that will allow researchers at the University of Liverpool to look into the impacts of small animals as pets. Their goal is to find out if small pets have an effect on people’s well-being, too.

The Possible Health Benefits of Having Small Pets

Experts will conduct interviews and surveys with people who adopted small pets, such as mice, rats, rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs, from shelters. Those interviews will be used to gain insight into pet adoption and the human-animal bond, and will also help determine if adopting small animals caused any changes to individuals’ physical and mental well-being.

More specifically, this study will be divided into two parts. In the first part, in-depth interviews will be conducted in person with 30 pet parents to dive into their thoughts and experiences as small pet owners. In other words, these interviews will focus on small pet ownership and well-being.

In the second part, a longitudinal cohort study will be conducted, and this will include 450 new pet parents. The researchers will follow up with them at regular intervals (one month, three months, and six months) after they adopt small pets from shelters. By tracking these participants, experts will be able to learn about the growth of the bond between human and animal, and they will also be able to note changes in physical, psychological, and social health.

Research That Will Likely Reveal a Lot

Researchers hope to do more than figure out the impact of small furry pets on people’s well-being; they also want to learn more about the adoption process and people’s experiences with it. All of the information gathered can then be used to help shelters perform more effectively when it comes to small pet adoption.

With information about the benefits of small pets on human well-being, more people may be inspired to adopt these furry companions and make them a part of their family.
