Working from home provides a host of conveniences, one of which is being able to spend all day with your pets, keeping an eye on them and making sure they have everything they need. But pets can also be distracting or cause a commotion when you’re trying to meet deadlines or engage in a virtual meeting with colleagues.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a few tips for working at home with your pets so you can take advantage of the perks and ensure everyone, including your furbabies, is happy.

Give Your Pets Ways to Entertain Themselves

You don’t want your dog or cat bothering you while you’re trying to get work done, so it’s important to keep them occupied and entertained while you’re busy. That way, you can tackle your to-do list and they won’t feel bored or ignored.

A few options include:

  • Interactive and electronic toys for cats and dogs: Pets can use these to play on their own, but keep in mind that some toys are louder than others.
  • Catnip toys for cats or chew toys for dogs and cats: These can keep pets occupied without making noise.
  • Puzzle toys for dogs and cats: These are mentally stimulating, tackle boredom, and provide rewards.
  • Window and wall perches for cats: These let kitties see what’s going on outside and view their surroundings from a high vantage point in the room—both of which are fun for your feline.
  • Snuffle mats for dogs: These products, like the Pet Parents Forager Mat, can encourage foraging behavior and help relieve stress and anxiety.

Whether you let your pets spend time with you in your home office or you prefer to shut the door and work without them in the room, giving them plenty of opportunities to play on their own will help prevent unwanted disturbances like barking, walking across your desk, or scratching at the door.

Bear in mind that some pets behave better when they’re in the room with you because they don’t feel left out. Consider your unique companion’s personality and needs when deciding on sharing your workspace with them versus keeping them in another area of your house during work hours.

Create a Routine That Includes Breaks to Interact with Your Pets

Aim to follow a schedule that will allow you to accomplish your tasks and take several breaks. By doing so, you’ll give your pets the attention and interaction they need throughout the day, they won’t feel lonely, and they may be less inclined to bother you while you’re working.

Over time, your companions will learn the routine, especially if you’re strict with following the schedule you set. They’ll know when to expect food, playtime, exercise, and nap time, which means you can focus more on working.

During breaks, some pets might crave cuddles, or you can use toys to help them release their energy. For example, you can toss a soft ball for your dog to fetch, or use a wand toy like the Cat Dancer Cat Charmer to let your kitty “hunt” for a few minutes—these activities will double as exercise and help tire them out. And, in between these fun breaks, you might have them relax in a crate or pet bed while you get back to work.

Of course, if you have dogs, it’s important to take breaks so they can go outside, whether it’s for a potty break in the yard or a short walk around the block. The physical activity can ensure your canine is tired enough to rest while you work until your next break—plus, you get some fresh air and exercise, too.

Keep Your Workspace Safe for Your Pets

You might not realize it at first, but your home office can have a lot of pet hazards. In the same way that you’d childproof a room, you can do the same for your furry friends. That way, you can share the space without fretting about their well-being.

For example, avoid decorating with toxic indoor plants, and keep cleaning supplies locked away in an area your pets can’t access. Also, make sure there aren’t any loose wires that your pets might be tempted to chew. Anything small, such as paper clips, can be dangerous, too, because they can pose a choking hazard or be ingested and cause a serious injury or obstruction.

Enjoy the Perks of Working From Home with Your Pets!

With the right workspace setup and routine, you can definitely enjoy every minute that you’re working from home with your feline and canine companions. Proper training can go a long way in ensuring your pets will behave, especially when you need to be part of a meeting or take a phone call, but simply setting aside time throughout the day to give them the attention they require can make a big difference.
