Okay, so let’s talk about how we can enrich our dogs’ lives. In short, how can we kick boredom to the curb and boost all those natural canine instincts that seem to have been laid dormant due to the easy, domesticated lives they now live.

Just like with humans, this can be achieved through simple changes in daily routine and finding new ways to test those little grey cells. Something that will excite the senses, introduce new challenges, and keep all involved, on their toes.

Now, when it comes to our dogs, increasing their exposure to sensory stimuli seems to be just the ticket for enriching both sensory and mental enrichment. By piquing their smell, sight, or sound senses our dogs are immediately encouraged to engage their mental faculties as they track down the cause.

Boosting the Enrichment Factor

They sky is the limite when it comes to enriching your pet's life, and it doesn't need to cost a fortune.

It can be as easy as throwing a handful of dry kibble or treats out into a grassy area, then letting your dog seek it out and forage around to recover all those tasty little bits. Or by changing up their usual walking route to include new sights, sounds, and smells.

Other tips for enriching your dog’s life include:

  • Keep a stash of puzzle toys, interactive toys, and snuffle mats in your pet gear arsenal for when inclement weather rules the day. No reason to lie around indoors feeling bored, right?
  • In addition to the standard game of fetch, why not get down and dirty with your pooch to build a bond and encourage mental stimulation? Tugging on a rope is a fun way to build strength and engage minds.
  • Mix it up a little by rotating favorite toys and blankets. Tuck them away for a few months, then bring them back out when your pet has grown tired of his current stash of playthings. They don’t always have to be brand new… just new to him. It’s an easy, cost-effective way to update his toy supply.
  • Create a scavenger hunt for your pooch that’s based on scent. Hide a favorite treat or toy that he can then sniff out. This is perfect for indoor or outdoor sensory enrichment and is so “portable” you can do it anywhere, anytime. Me? I’m thinking extended RV travel that can become SO tedious for a dog.
  • If your pet isn’t food-driven, try sourcing different scents that will help drive that innate inquisitive nature. A scent-training kit like this option that includes four nature-based scents (birch, anise, clove, and cypress) will instantly pique your pet’s curiosity and open up the world of nose work to you and your four-legged buddy.
  • One-on-one is such a great way to build a bond with your dog, and the easiest way to do this is by brushing him. We’re not talking a heavy-duty groom with bathing and nail trims that he may or may not enjoy. Just gentle brushing for 5 or ten minutes to help him relax and give him something to look forward to throughout the day.

Although dogs thrive on routine, you can keep it interesting by changing it up. Don’t alter the times of day you walk your pooch, just take a different route. Don’t discourage them from raiding their toy chest; simply swap out the ones they usually pick for something new. Adding little tweaks to their daily ritual – such as brushing, scent-training, or some one-on-one playtime –can bring instant enrichment to your dog’s life. Something we all want for our little buddies.
