What Temperature Does My Gecko Need?

Keeping your gecko healthy starts with one of the most important factors in reptile care: temperature. Since geckos are cold-blooded and rely on external heat to regulate their body functions, the wrong temperatures can quickly lead to serious problems. Too cold, and your gecko may become sluggish, stop eating, and face health issues. Too hot, and they can overheat or dehydrate.

Here’s a breakdown of what different types of pet geckos need when it comes to temperature.

Leopard Gecko Temperature Needs

Leopard Geckos are one of the most popular pet geckos. Native to the dry, rocky regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, they’re built for warm days and cooler nights.

  • Basking spot: 88–92 °F (31–33 °C)
  • Warm side ambient: ~84 °F (29 °C)
  • Cool side: 75–80 °F (24–27 °C)
  • Nighttime drop: 68–72 °F (20–22 °C)

These geckos absorb heat through their bellies, so an under-tank heat mat with a thermostat is usually better than an overhead light. It simulates their natural behavior and avoids stressing them out with too much bright light.

Crested Gecko Temperature Needs

Crested Geckos come from the cool, humid canopy of New Caledonia’s rainforests. They don’t tolerate heat well.

  • Daytime range: 72–78 °F (22–26 °C)
  • Nighttime drop: 65–72 °F (18–22 °C)
  • Maximum: Avoid temperatures over 82 °F (28 °C)

For most homes, ambient room temperature is enough. If needed, add a low-wattage ceramic heater with a thermostat. In hot climates or summer months, you may need a small fan or portable AC unit to avoid heat stress.

Tokay Gecko Temperature Needs

Tokay Geckos, known for their bold colors and loud calls, are native to Southeast Asia’s forests. They like it hot and humid.

  • Daytime ambient: 80–90 °F (27–32 °C)
  • Basking zone: 90–95 °F (32–35 °C)
  • Nighttime range: 70–80 °F (21–27 °C)

As arboreal geckos, they climb to regulate temperature. Place a ceramic heater or infrared lamp above a branch or vertical background. Use a digital probe thermometer near their basking spot to keep tabs on heat levels.

Day Gecko Temperature Needs

Day Geckos are active, sun-loving reptiles from Madagascar and nearby islands. They need both heat and full-spectrum lighting.

  • Ambient daytime: 75–80 °F (24–27 °C)
  • Basking zone: 90–95 °F (32–35 °C)
  • Nighttime drop: 68–75 °F (20–24 °C)

These geckos bask in the open, so use a UVB bulb or mercury vapor lamp to provide both heat and light. Always install a protective mesh guard to prevent burns if they climb too close.

Tools to Keep Temperatures Safe

No matter the species, temperature control comes down to having the right equipment:

  • Thermostats to prevent overheating
  • Digital thermometers (ideally with probes) for accuracy
  • Heat mats, ceramic heaters, or bulbs depending on species
  • UVB lighting where needed

Keeping temperatures in the right range isn’t optional - it’s essential. With a properly set-up terrarium and reliable gear, you’ll give your gecko what they need to stay active, eat well, and live a long, healthy life.
