Most pet owners know the dangers of overheating and hot pavement during summer, but there’s another seasonal risk that often flies under the radar: sunburn. While it’s common to think of sunburn as a human problem, animals, especially dogs and cats, can suffer the same painful effects of too much sun exposure.And it’s more than just an occasional red nose. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to peeling, inflammation, long-term skin damage, and in some cases, even skin cancer in pets.“Pets with light-colored fur or thin coats are particularly at risk,” warns Peony Melbourne, a veterinary surgeon with the RCVS in the UK. “Areas like the nose, ears, and belly are especially vulnerable, these spots aren’t protected by fur and can burn easily.”Sunburn tends to affect areas where an animal’s fur is thin or absent, such as the tips of the ears, the nose, the belly, and around the eyes. Animals with light-colored fur or pink skin are at the highest risk, as are certain breeds with very short or sparse coats. Hairless breeds, such as the Chinese Crested dog or Sphynx cat, are particularly vulnerable, although even well-coated pets can be at risk in certain areas.The most common signs of sunburn in pets include reddened or warm skin, excessive licking or scratching at the affected area, sensitivity to touch, or visible peeling. In more severe cases, skin may blister or scab, which can require medical treatment.According to veterinary professionals, the best way to protect pets is to limit their exposure to direct sunlight during peak UV hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If pets are outside during these hours, access to shade is crucial.In addition to minimizing sun exposure, pet-safe sunscreen is another line of defense. These products are formulated without ingredients toxic to animals, such as zinc oxide or certain essential oils, both of which are commonly found in human sunscreens. Sunscreen made specifically for pets can be applied to high-risk areas like the nose, ears, and belly. Some formulations come in wipes or sticks, making application less of a battle.For pets who spend extended time outdoors, whether hiking, at the beach, or just lounging in the yard, lightweight UV-protective clothing is becoming more common. Study Finds Owning a Pet Is As Good For You As Being Married

Owning a pet cat or a dog can be as satisfying as being married, or regularly seeing your friends, or family, a new study shows. The study, published in the journal Social Indicators Research, also found that having a four-legged companion offers the same psychological benefits as being married or earning an extra $90,000 a year. Researchers at Kent University used the “life satisfaction” approach, which economists use to measure intangible assets like family and friendship, to calculate a hypothetical income. The study analyzed data from 2,500 British families and found that owning a pet comes with an increase in life satisfaction of 3-4 points on a scale of 1-7. Similar values were acquired for meeting with friends and family regularly.In other studies, economists have shown that marriage, compared to being single, is worth around $90,000 a year. On the other hand, separation is equal to around minus $170,000. The lead author of this study, Dr Adelina Gschwandtner, an economics professor at the University of Kent, told The Times she was inspired by a recent research paper that put a price tag on human friendships. “I thought, ‘well, if it’s possible for friends, why not for pets?’”“I understand why some people may be skeptical,” she added. “Given that pets are considered by many as best friends and family members, these values appear to be plausible… I also suspect that many people don’t actually realize how important their pets are for them.”Numerous studies have shown that owning a pet offers many health benefits. Research shows that spending time with a dog relieves stress, keeps you active, and helps you live longer. Stroking a cat has been proven to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Having a cat at home can reduce the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis in children exposed to allergens. A simple act of petting a cat or a dog helps lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol, promoting calmness and reducing stress. Dr Gschwandtner added, “This research answers the question whether overall pet companions are good for us with a resounding ‘Yes’.”“Pets care for us, and there is a significant monetary value associated with their companionship. This information can be used for health care practices and policy aiming to increase well-being and life satisfaction of humans involving pets.” This study also shed some light on the personality traits of pet owners, noting that cat owners appear to be more open, while dog owners tend to be more agreeable, extroverted, and less neurotic. The study’s authors also pointed out that pet owners in general appear to be more open, conscientious, and extroverted than people who don’t own a pet.While the mental and physical benefits of owning a dog are well-known, scientists are still debating the overall impact pets have on their owners’ well-being. According to Megan Mueller, an associate professor at Tufts University who studies the relationship between people and animals, things are more complicated than they seem. “A lot of us see our pets as contributing to our life satisfaction, but depending on how you measure that in the research, it comes out different ways.” But rather than comparing pet ownership and life satisfaction, the authors of this study decided to prove a causal link. If the results of this study are correct, and pets improve satisfaction as much as data suggests, Dr Gschwandtner hopes policymakers will make it easier for people to own cats or dogs. Join the PetGuide community. Is Your Dog at Risk for IVDD? A Guide to Breeds and Prevention

We all love seeing our dogs living their best possible lives, one full of happy zoomies, comfortable naps, and pain-free adventures. But to make that a priority, we must also familiarize ourselves with the common health conditions each breed may face and how to keep our pup safe. One such condition worth being fully informed about is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).While the medical name of this condition may sound intimidating, it’s an all-too-common spinal condition among some breeds that requires proactive care.In this guide, I’ll break down what IVDD is, highlight the breeds that are at the highest risk, teach you how to recognize the signs (even the most subtle), and provide you with a clear, actionable plan for making changes in your home and daily routine that will help to significantly lower your dog’s risk. Think of this as your essential roadmap to protecting your dog.What is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)?To protect your dog’s back, it's helpful to first understand what’s happening underneath their fur. Think of your dog’s spine not just as a column of bone, but as a flexible, shock-absorbing system. More specifically, consider the cushioning intervertebral discs in the spine, the same discs that allow your dog to run, jump, and twist. These are specialized structures that sit between each bony segment of the spine.Each disc is like a miniature, tough, fluid-filled pouch. It has a tough outer layer (like a tire wall) and a soft, jelly-like center. These discs serve an important role, cushioning the impact of your dog’s every movement. They also allow the spine the flexibility needed for your dog to move freely, including turning its head and arching its back.Explaining IVDDIVDD, sometimes referred to as a “slipped disc,” happens when these essential cushions break down and stop doing their job. It’s a progressive, degenerative condition, meaning it continues to get worse over time, especially if it’s left unaddressed.Degeneration: The first problem is often the disc itself. The jelly center begins to dry out, harden, and calcify. This causes the disc to lose its shock-absorbing ability and become brittle.Herniation (The Rupture): A degenerated disc is highly vulnerable. Any sudden force, or even normal movement over time, can cause it to either bulge or rupture.Spinal Cord Compression: When the disc material bulges or bursts, it pushes upward into the space occupied by the delicate spinal cord. This pressure is what causes the symptoms we see, ranging from agonizing pain to complete paralysis. The severity will depend on how much the material pushes out and how violently it impacts the cord.The Two Main Types of IVDDVeterinarians classify IVDD into two main types, named after the human pathologist, Hans Hansen. Understanding the type helps explain the onset and risk factors.The first type is Type I IVDD, which is characterized by the sudden, explosive rupture of the hardened, jelly-like center. The onset is typically sudden, often triggered by a seemingly minor movement, like jumping. This type is most common in small, short-legged breeds, like the dachshund.The second is Type II IVDD, which involves the slower, more gradual bulging of the outer ring of the disc into the spinal canal. The onset is slow and progressive, with symptoms that may appear as increasing stiffness or weakness over several months. Type II is typically seen in older, larger dogs.High-Risk Dog Breeds Any dog can develop IVDD, particularly as they get older. However, genetics and body shape mean that certain dog breeds carry a much higher risk, specifically to the acute Type I IVDD. By familiarizing yourself with your dog’s risk, you can better understand the need for prevention and how to keep your pup safe. The Chondrodystrophic Predisposition Dogs most vulnerable to Type I IVDD are those with a genetic trait called chondrodystrophy, which causes disproportionately short legs and long backs. This body type means there is constant, uneven stress placed on the dog’s spine. It has also been linked to premature degeneration and hardening of the spinal discs, which could cause them to rupture much earlier in life. The following dog breeds are considered to be the most at-risk due to this body structure: Dachshunds: They are the poster child for IVD, with the highest prevalence of all breeds. Their extreme length and short legs make them highly susceptible to disc issues throughout the entire length of their spine. Corgis ( Pembroke and Cardigan): Not only do these dogs have a chondrodystrophic body shape, but they are also a highly active breed, which adds to the force put on their spine daily. French Bulldogs: While their bodies are not as long as a Dachshund, their compacted bodies and structure still put them at a higher risk, especially for issues in the cervical (neck) spine. Basset Hounds: Their heavy frames and short legs mean their spines are facing persistent stress, often leading to disc issues. Beagles & Miniature/Toy Poodles: These breeds don’t have the appearance that would raise a red flag as being an issue, but they do carry a genetic predisposition that puts them at a higher risk. Small “Fluffy” Breeds: Breeds like the Shih Tzus, Pekingese, and Lhasa Apsos are also genetically predisposed to trouble. In these breeds, IVDD is often experienced in the neck, causing severe pain and making it harder for them to lower their heads to eat or drink. High Risk Breeds for Type II IVDDWhile Type I IVDD is a genetic lottery for the breeds listed above, Type II IVDD is a little different. It’s much more similar to disc disease in humans, a slower, age-related degeneration that can affect any breed. That said, there are still some breeds that are at a statistically higher risk. Older large-breed dogs, such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Doberman Pinschers, can develop Type II or IVDD. In these cases, the symptoms are often more gradual, appearing as subtle hind-end weakness, stiffness, or an unsteady gait. It’s not uncommon for it to be mistaken for simple arthritis. However, I want to stress again that any breed can experience IVDD.

With the help of Wags and Walks, BarkAir, and The Brady Hunter Foundation, the pups were flown to New York, where they would start the next chapter of their lives with the Southampton Animal Shelter. The journey was highlighted on the show, raising awareness not only for the dogs included in this transport but for the world of animal rescue as a whole. Recently, Jeff Corwin and Josh Fox, Founder of The Brady Hunter Foundation, appeared on CBS Mornings Plus to celebrate National Pet Day. As part of the show, they shared some incredible news about the LA Rescue dogs the world fell in love with on the show. “We flew 20+ dogs from the wildfires,” Fox announced. “We brought them to Southampton, and we’re so happy to report that every single one of the dogs has been adopted.”

How Hot is Too Hot for Your Cat?

Summer is officially here, bringing longer days, beautiful sunshine, and that relaxed summer holiday atmosphere that we all look forward to. But while you’re busy enjoying the warmth, your cat may be dealing with a different experience. Unlike humans, cats aren’t efficient at regulating their body temperature, making them highly susceptible to overheating, even in temperatures that you may consider comfortable. As cat parents, it’s absolutely crucial that we understand the risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, learn to recognize the subtle warning signs, and be prepared to react appropriately. In this guide, I’ll explain exactly how hot is too hot for cats, provide you with the information necessary to keep your cat safe, and share some practical tips for keeping them cool on even the hottest summer days. After all, we want them to enjoy their summer vacation, too! Understanding How Heat Affects Your Cat The first step in keeping your cat safe is understanding how their body responds to and interacts with heat, especially extreme heat, and why they are so vulnerable to overheating. When the temperatures climb, humans sweat to cool down. Our cats, however, have a harder time regulating their body temperature and staying comfortable. What is Considered Normal Cat Body Temperature? A healthy cat’s normal body temperature ranges between 100.4∘F and 102.5∘F (38∘C and 39.2∘C). This may seem a bit higher than expected because it’s higher than what is considered normal, but their bodies do generally run warmer. If your cat’s temperature rises beyond this range, their body has to work harder to cool it back down. If they are unable to get back to a healthy temperature quickly enough, they could face severe health conditions, such as heat exhaustion and ultimately, heat stroke. How Cats Regulate Temperature (And Why It’s Limited)While cats don’t sweat like people, there are a few natural ways they may try to cool themselves off. However, it’s essential that we recognize these methods of cooling and regulating body temperature are significantly less efficient, leaving them vulnerable to overheating. Panting: Dogs are known to pant heavily when they need to cool down. With cats, panting isn’t as common and usually means a more serious situation – they are highly stressed, in pain, or significantly overheating. If you see your cat panting, it’s a red flag. Sweating: Previously, I said that cats don’t sweat like humans, but they do have a few (very few) sweat glands. These are primarily found on their paw pads. You may occasionally see damp paw prints on a cool surface if your cat is hot, and they can help a tiny bit, but they aren’t effective as a major cooling strategy for the entire body. Grooming/Saliva Evaporation: Cats often groom themselves when they’re feeling overheated. As the saliva evaporates from their fur, it offers an evaporative cooling effect, similar to how sweat evaporating off our skin cools us. Seeking Shade/Cool Surfaces: The most common way a cat will try to cool down is by seeking out a shaded, cool environment. For example, they may try stretching out on a cool tile or hardwood floor. While this helps, it’s often not enough in truly hot temperatures. So, How Hot is Too Hot for Cats? There isn’t a single “magic number” that makes an environment too hot for every cat. Instead, there are many different individual factors that will play a role. However, a general rule of thumb is that temperatures of 80°F (26.7°C) and higher are considered risky for most cats. This is especially true if combined with these risk factors: High Humidity: This makes it harder for evaporative cooling methods (such as panting and saliva evaporation) to work effectively, trapping heat in the body. A 70°F day with high humidity can be more dangerous than an 80°F day with low humidity.Enclosed Spaces: When discussing this topic, we typically refer to the life-threatening risk of leaving a cat in a parked car. Even for “just a minute” with the windows cracked, the temperatures inside can rise quickly turning the vehicle into an oven. But this also applies to unventilated rooms, sunrooms, or carriers left in direct sunlight. Individual Sensitivity: Just like people, some cats are going to be more susceptible to heat than others. This is why it’s so important for cat parent to get to know their cats, their usual behaviors, and their comfort levels. Is Your Cat at High Risk for Heat Exhaustion?While any cat can suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, there are some that are at a significantly higher risk of overheating. Consider whether your cat fits into any of the following high-risk groups: Age: Very young kittens and senior cats are less efficient at regulating their body temperatures, making them more susceptible to extreme temperatures. Brachycephalic (Flat-Faced) Breeds: Cat breeds with flatter faces, like Persians, Himalayans, and Exotic Shorthairs, are particularly susceptible to overheating. Their facial structure means they have shortened airways, making it more difficult for them to breathe efficiently, which in turn makes it harder for them to cool themselves through panting. Coat Types: A dense coat can offer some insulation against heat. However, long-haired or dense-coated cats can struggle more in high temperatures, especially if their undercoat isn’t regularly groomed out. Activity Level: Overly active or playful cats are at risk of pushing themselves too hard in a hot environment, which can cause their internal temperature to rise. Health Conditions: Cats with underlying health issues, such as heart disease, respiratory problems (like asthma), obesity, or arthritis (which limits their ability to move to cooler spots), are at an increased risk. If your cat falls into any one (or multiple) of these high-risk categories, knowledge is power. Recognizing that they are more vulnerable to overheating is the first step in taking the steps necessary to keep them safe and healthy.
