Here are five ways to keep your cat cool this summer.Hydration: Helping your cat stay cool this summer starts by helping your cat stay hydrated. Make sure there are lots of water dishes available to your cat. Place them in shaded, but well trafficked areas away from your cat’s food. So, take steps to ensure she will have a cool spot to retreat to whenever she feels like it. Make sure that at least one of your cat’s beds is located in a shaded area. That’s the best way to encourage her to stay out of the sun. An extra fan or two blowing in her general direction will help while she’s trying to take a nap. One way to keep your house cooler during hot summer days, and create more shaded areas for your kitty, is by closing the blinds or curtains to prevent the sunshine from coming in and causing the room to become hotter. By following a consistent daily schedule, you help your puppy understand what to expect, taking the guesswork out of their day and minimizing any confusion or uncertainty.Designate specific areas within your home as your puppy’s “ safe place.” These should be places your puppy can retreat to when feeling overwhelmed. Plus, when paired with careful puppy proofing, they are places you can trust your puppy will be safe and sound. This could be a cozy crate, a designated room with a baby gate, or a comfortable playpen.A strict meal and bathroom schedule is the secret to success when training. By sticking to predictable feeding times and frequent potty breaks, especially after meals, naps, and play sessions, you can minimize accidents in your home and start to create good habits.A consistent schedule will help you establish a sense of order, communicate expectations, and prioritize your puppy’s emotional well-being and development.Potty Training StrategiesAs I just mentioned, frequent potty breaks are essential to successful house training. This should include bathroom breaks immediately after meals, naps, and play sessions – times when a puppy is most likely to have an accident.When implemented correctly, crate training can be a valuable tool for house training. Plus, the crate is a den or safe space for your puppy. When shopping for a crate, ensure it is appropriately sized (your puppy should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably). Never use the crate as punishment – it should always be treated as a positive space for your pup.Before bringing your puppy home, you should stock up on essential cleaning supplies, such as enzyme cleaners to effectively eliminate messes and prevent future accidents, as well as puppy pads ( disposable or reusable) to protect important spaces in your home (like that newly finished hardwood floor).Always reward your puppy with enthusiastic praise and high-value treats when they go to the bathroom outside. This will help them recognize that going to the bathroom in that designated area is a good thing, encouraging them to continue with this behavior.Socialization and Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement is far more effective than punishment in helping teach your puppy good habits. The first step is identifying what best motivates your puppy. We often associate positive reinforcement with food treats, but this won’t be the best option for every dog. Instead, you may find they are better motivated by verbal praise, a favorite toy, or a belly rub.Avoid punishment-based methods when training, as this can create fear and anxiety. If you run into challenges, don’t hesitate to reach out to a certified dog trainer or behaviorist. A professional can provide you with helpful tips and tailored advice to help you reach your training goals. Controlled socialization is another essential step in setting your new pup up for success. Gradually expose your pup to new environments, people, and dogs in a safe and positive way. Start with short, low-intensity encounters. Keep training sessions brief and engaging. Short, frequent training sessions will be far more effective than long, drawn-out ones that leave you both feeling frustrated.

Don’t Wait and See: When Your Hiding Cat Is a Sign of Trouble

Have you ever returned home from a long day at work only to find your cat squeezed into a dusty corner of the closet or peeking out from under the couch, refusing even to come out when they’re called? It’s easy to laugh it off and think, “My cat’s just being a cat.” But is that all that’s happening? While it’s true that cats love a good hiding spot, a cat who is suddenly or persistently hiding is often trying to tell you something important. Their disappearance is more than just enjoying some “me time,” it can be a vital clue that there is something “off” in terms of their physical or emotional well-being. In this post, we’ll explore the different reasons your cat may be hiding, from stress in their home environment to a serious medical issue, so you can determine if your cat’s newest behavior quirk is a normal response to things in their life or a cry for help. Why Cats HideHiding is an instinctual behavior for cats, rooted in their evolutionary history as both predators and prey. A cat might be in a playful mood, hiding to pounce on a toy or an unsuspecting household member. Our cats love sneaking up on our playful pup, Lucifer. They may also seek out a hiding spot for a quiet nap away from the hustle and bustle of a busy family household. This is the normal side of hiding, and it’s a sign that a cat feels secure and comfortable enough to relax in their environment. However, there are also times when your cat’s hiding may be a warning sign of an underlying problem. In these cases, the only way to help your cat feel more comfortable in their home is to first address the cause. Emotional and Behavioral Reasons for Hiding A cat’s hiding can be a coping mechanism or a response to stress, anxiety, or fear. Changes in the home, such as the arrival of a new baby, the introduction of a new pet, or even just the presence of guests visiting, can feel overwhelming. Loud noises, such as fireworks, thunderstorms, or home renovations, can also send a cat running for cover. In these cases, hiding is their way of managing their sensory overload and reclaiming a sense of control over their environment. Hiding as a Medical Red FlagA sudden change in a cat’s behavior, such as hiding when they are usually social, is often a significant red flag. This can signal a serious medical problem requiring a visit to your veterinarian. A cat in pain or discomfort will often retreat to a secluded spot to avoid being touched or to protect a sensitive area. This could be due to anything from a painful tooth to arthritis or an internal injury. Similarly, a sick cat will instinctively hide, a behavior that dates back to their wild ancestors hiding any signs of vulnerability from predators. Contact your veterinarian if your cat is hiding and also showing other symptoms, like: Loss of appetite Changes in litter box habits Lethargy Uncharacteristic aggression when approachedAs cats age, they may also start to hide more due to a decline in their senses or because of conditions like feline cognitive dysfunction ( dementia in cats), which can cause disorientation and confusion. It’s critical to remember that cats are masters of hiding their illnesses, which means you must closely monitor any changes in their behavior. If you are concerned about your cat’s well-being or suspect there could be a medical issue at play, get help as soon as possible. Waiting to see if they “snap out of it” can be dangerous. When to Reach Out to Your Veterinarian It can be hard to know when hiding crosses the line from a simple behavioral quirk to a serious or potentially life-threatening medical concern. While it’s always best to follow your gut, here is a checklist of warning signs that can help you recognize when it’s time to call the vet and put an end to the “wait and see” approach: Duration: If your cat is hiding for more than 24 to 48 hours and won’t even come out for food, water, or to use the litter box, something is wrong. Accompanying Symptoms: Pay close attention if hiding is paired with any other signs of illness or distress. As I already mentioned, this may include changes in appetite or thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a noticeable change in their usual behavior. Unusual Hiding Spots: A cat who normally hides under the bed but is now found cowering in the back corner of the closet may be trying to tell you something significant. Additional Behavioral Changes: Does your usually friendly, social cat hiss, growl, or swat at you when you approach their hiding spot? This is a serious sign of pain or fear. Physical Signs: Any visible signs of injury, such as limping, a visible wound, or difficulty breathing, coupled with hiding, should be considered an immediate emergency. When you bring your cat to the vet, be prepared to discuss any warning signs or changes in detail. Keeping a journal of your cat’s behavior can help ensure you don’t forget anything important. The vet will likely perform a careful physical exam and ask questions about your cat’s history and any changes you’ve observed. They may recommend diagnostic tests, such as blood work, urinalysis, or X-rays, to get a full picture of what may be happening internally. Ultimately, a vet visit is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis and identify the proper treatment for your cat. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health and well-being of your best friend!

More than Half of Pet Owners are Skipping Veterinary Care

Both cat and dog owners have started to skip necessary veterinary care for their pets. A national survey has found that more than half of pet owners, including those in high-earning households, have skipped necessary veterinary care or declined recommended treatment mainly because of the cost.According to the survey, conducted by PetSmart Charities and Gallup, seven in 10 owners who skipped or declined care listed cost as the main reason, saying they couldn’t afford the treatment or didn’t think it was worth the cost. What’s worrisome is that the results were surprisingly similar across all income levels. “There’s a narrative that says that this only affects folks in the bottom part of the income spectrum,” said PetSmart Charities President Aimee Gilbreath. “But it’s all across the spectrum. That surprised me - and it worries me. If folks in the top half are struggling to afford primary vet care, who can afford vet care now?”The State of Pet Care report found that vet care costs in the U.S. have risen more than 60% since 2014, forcing many pet parents to decline recommended treatments for their pets.“At least 60% of households have a pet, and people love them as family members,” said Gilbreath. “We don’t think they should be a luxury item. They are good for people’s mental, physical, and emotional health, and if it becomes unaffordable, that’s really a sad situation.” The survey of 2,498 adults owning at least one cat or dog discovered that 52% of pet owners have skipped or declined veterinary care at some point in the past. The most commonly declined veterinary services were diagnostic procedures (22%), vaccinations (18%), and elective surgeries (16%). However, 11% admitted they have declined recommended medication, and 7% said they have refused life-saving surgeries. Of those who declined care, 71% of owners listed cost as the main reason. Although that response was the highest among owners with a household income between $36,000 and $60,000, nearly two-thirds of those earning $90,000 or more said the same. Researchers found that for those with higher incomes, declining care wasn’t just a matter of affordability. Only a third of owners earning $90,000 or more said they couldn’t afford the cost, compared to 44% of owners who said the cost wasn’t worth it. According to Gilbreath, the dramatic increase in veterinary costs over a short time period is to blame. “We’re in a time when families are really stretched, and unexpected expenses like a big vet bill are hard to manage,” she added.As a result, animal shelters across the country are experiencing an influx of pet owners surrendering their pets due to their inability to afford veterinary care. While financial troubles are forcing many pet parents to decline veterinary care, 73% of parents said they weren’t presented with more affordable options. The survey found that providing payment plan options would make a huge difference for many pet owners. More than half of the respondents said they couldn’t afford to spend more than $1,000 if their pet had a life-threatening condition. But if given a one-year, no-interest option, most said that would double what they could pay. “We would love to see options like 18-month, interest-free financing,” said Gilbreath. “More vets are starting to offer options, but it’s relatively new.”Owners facing financial constraints should talk with their vets about possible treatment alternatives or payment options that meet their needs.
