A survey commissioned by Darwin’s Natural Pet Products has found that most dog parents believe they were matched with their dogs by fate. So, if you have always felt a deep connection to your canine companion, or you see that they mirror some of your own personality traits, you’re like a lot of other people who share their homes with dogs.

Dogs and Their Humans Share Similar Traits

The survey, conducted by Talker Research in September 2025, involved 2,000 dog parents. They wanted to see if people chose companions who reflected their personalities. The results show that, yes, people are not only emotionally connected to their pets, but they can also see themselves in their fur babies.

Here are some of the main findings:

  • 81%, of those who were surveyed said that being matched with their dog was fate—in other words, they think it was meant to be.

  • 74% of the people surveyed stated that their dogs are similar to them in many ways, such as emotional sensitivity, energy levels, and social habits.

  • Dog parents who consider themselves introverted were more likely to share that their dogs are quiet, shy, cautious, calm, easygoing, or stubborn.

  • Dog parents who consider themselves extroverted were more likely to describe their dogs as outgoing, affectionate, energetic, friendly, and driven.

  • 82% of extroverts said their dogs are also extroverts. 32% of introverts said their dogs are extroverted.

  • 62% of introverts described their dogs as introverted. On the other hand, 16% of extroverts said their dogs are introverts.

  • 83% of those surveyed said their dogs reduce their anxiety instantly.

  • 75% of pet parents said they share an unspoken understanding with their dogs often or all the time.

  • 68% of survey respondents described their canines as their emotional twins.

  • 56% of those surveyed described their dogs as their soulmates.

  • The top five traits that people think they share with their dogs: friendly, affectionate, energetic, easygoing, independent.

All of this shows that a dog’s personality often matches their human’s personality. And other studies have already uncovered that people and their dogs share personality traits. So, it’s no surprise that many pet parents think fate played a role in helping them find their furry friends.
