Pets make our homes brighter, but sometimes everyday items can trigger allergies we don’t expect. It might show up as itchy skin, watery eyes, sneezing, or tummy troubles.

While we often think about food, common household products can also cause problems. Here are five everyday things that could be affecting your pet.

1. Cleaning Products

Many cleaning products contain chemicals and fragrances that are harsh on a pet’s skin and respiratory system. Using natural, unscented cleaners and rinsing surfaces thoroughly can help reduce exposure.

2. Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softeners

The scent boosters and detergents we love for our clothes can irritate sensitive pets. Residue on bedding, towels, and clothing can cause skin rashes, scratching, or sneezing. Switching to hypoallergenic, fragrance-free detergents often makes a noticeable difference.

3. Air Fresheners and Candles

Air fresheners, scented candles, and plug-in fragrances can irritate your pets’ noses and lungs, and in some cases, may pose more serious health risks. Cats and dogs have highly sensitive respiratory systems, so prolonged exposure can trigger coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, or other respiratory issues.

4. Houseplants

Pet owners should be wary of houseplants. Some, like lilies, philodendrons, pothos, and dieffenbachia, are toxic if ingested, while others—such as spider plants, peace lilies, or ficus—can release pollen or sap that irritates skin, eyes, or the digestive system. Before bringing any greenery into shared spaces, research the plant carefully.

5. Dust and Carpets

Dust is unavoidable, but it can carry allergens like mold spores, pollen, and dust mites. Pets that spend time on carpets or rugs can develop skin irritation or respiratory issues. Regular vacuuming and carpet-washing can significantly reduce allergens in your home.
