1. Inspect Paws Regularly
Make a habit of checking your dog’s paws after walks or playtime. Look for cuts, cracks, swelling, or foreign objects like small stones, glass, or burrs stuck between the toes. Catching issues early can prevent infections or long-term discomfort.
2. Keep Nails Trimmed
Overgrown nails can cause pain, affect walking posture, and even lead to joint problems. Trim your dog’s nails every 3–4 weeks, or as needed, using a proper nail clipper. If you hear clicking on the floor, it’s time for a trim.
3. Moisturize to Prevent Cracking
Just like human skin, paw pads can become dry and crack, especially in extreme weather. Use a dog-safe paw balm or moisturizer to keep them soft and protected. Avoid human lotions, as some ingredients can be toxic to dogs.
4. Protect from Extreme Temperatures
Hot pavement in summer can burn paw pads, while icy or salted sidewalks in winter can cause irritation.
Test surfaces with your hand. If it’s too hot or cold for you, it’s too hot or cold for your dog. Use booties for added protection and walk during cooler times of the day.
5. Clean After Outdoor Adventures
Washing your dog’s paws after walks not only removes dirt but also eliminates harmful substances like road salt, pesticides, or allergens. Use lukewarm water and a soft towel, or keep paw wipes handy for quick clean-ups.
Bottom Line
Healthy paws are essential for a happy, active dog.
A few minutes of regular care can prevent injuries, improve comfort, and keep tails wagging. Your dog trusts you to look after them, so make paw care part of your regular routine.
