Beware of Counterfeit Pet Products

Pet parents are being warned that counterfeit products for their companions are becoming increasingly common. They’ve become such a problem, in fact, that the Better Business Bureau stated that they’ve seen a dramatic increase in online scams in this area. So, as you shop for your cat, dog, or any other pet, be diligent to avoid being scammed into buying cheaper and potentially unsafe items.

Pet accessories, in particular, seem to be the types of products in the pet care market that are used to trick consumers. You might see an ad on social media for something that looks legitimate but actually isn’t a top-quality, brand-name product. Or, you might place an order and never receive it.

Shop Smart To Protect Yourself, and Your Pet, From Scams

It’s best to shop from reputable websites with recognizable names. Experts advise checking that a retailer has contact information on their website, and make sure it’s a secure site as well. If you aren’t sure, you can look up reviews of a retailer to see what others have to say about them, in addition to reading reviews on individual products.

Also, check a product’s details carefully. Confirm that you’re buying something made from non-toxic, durable materials or ingredients, and be sure it was made by a brand you know and trust. This is really important if you’re shopping for things like parasite preventatives or supplements.

Counterfeit products may look just like their brand-name counterparts, but they might be dangerous to your pet. A good example: the self-cleaning litter boxes that injured and killed cats—those were made by unknown brands, not trusted brands like Litter-Robot.

As a pet parent, it’s important to be aware of the threat of fake websites and knockoff products when shopping for your companion. It’s better to spend more on a brand that has done the work of creating high-quality, safe products you can trust.

Bottom line: If a well-known item is being sold for much less than usual, that’s a red flag, as is a strange website. And remember that, in addition to shopping from retailers with a positive reputation, you can go directly to a manufacturer’s website to be sure you’re buying exactly what you want.
