Pet Partners has named Boo, a cockatoo, their Pet of the Year for 2026, and he is the first bird to ever win this award, which is given to a pet who raises the highest amount of money during a six-week fundraising competition. Boo’s team was able to raise over $33,000 to support the mission of Pet Partners, which is to help people through the use of animal-assisted interventions.

Get to Know Boo the Therapy Bird

Boo is 41 years old and a registered therapy bird whose past unfortunately includes blindness, abuse, neglect, and health problems. Today, he is thriving, living in Virginia, and helping a variety of people, including seniors and neurodivergent children. Plus, he has been a Pet Partners therapy animal since 2025.

Boo’s owner is Amy Hurst, who battled cancer and found comfort with her bird while she was receiving treatment. Amy realized how much caring for birds and being around them can benefit people during difficult times, so she went on to become a Certified Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist and a Certified Animal-Assisted Therapist, and also founded the PRISM Bird Program.

A Surgery That Changed Boo’s Life

When Boo became a part of Amy’s family, it was clear that he was in poor condition, with missing feathers and low muscle mass, so she helped him regain his health. She also took Boo, who was 40 years old at the time, to NC State University so he could undergo a surgery that removed cataracts and successfully restored his vision after he’d spent 11 years without it. Since then, he’s been able to do amazing work as a therapy bird.

The $33,600+ that Boo’s team raised for Pet Partners is the highest amount of money ever raised for the competition. So, he made history not only in being the first bird to ever win, but also in the amount of money raised, and he’s continuing to make an impact by proving just how therapeutic pet birds can be.
