Hamster Owner Tracks How Much His Pet Runs Each Night

If you’ve ever seen a hamster run inside their exercise wheel, you know they can go pretty fast. But just how fast does a hamster run, and how much do they run? That’s a question asked by Thijs de Buck, who is an MRI physicist and runner in the Netherlands. He decided to build a tracker that would log the speed and distance of his hamster, Mollie, whenever he used his wheel every night.

A Hamster, His Exercise Wheel, and the Strava App

How could Thijs learn about his pet’s nighttime running routine? Well, when 10-month-old Mollie uses his exercise wheel, the tracker that Thijs built collects data, and the data is uploaded to Strava, which is an app that helps you track activities like running, walking, and cycling.

Each night, when Mollie runs, his time, distance, and pace are tracked for Thijs to analyze. Thijs wanted to look at the distance his hamster covered at night, and it turns out that Mollie runs an impressive amount.

One log showed that, in the span of 4 hours 37 minutes, Mollie covered 6.06 miles. Another log showed that, in 3 hours 56 minutes, he ran 5.55 miles. On average, Mollie covers nearly 10 kilometers (roughly 6 miles) per night and nearly 70 kilometers (roughly 43 miles) weekly.

In terms of speed, Thijs noticed that Mollie often runs in short bursts, and goes as fast as 4–5 kilometers per hour (roughly 2–3 miles per hour). And he seems to run on a schedule, as he tends to start his runs around the same time each night.

Making this even more fun is the fact that Mollie has loads of followers on Strava, all supporting the little rodent and seeing what he accomplishes—the hamster is more popular than Thijs, receiving more kudos on the app than he does. So, if you use the Strava app to track your own exercise routine and goals, consider searching for Mollie and following him for inspiration.

Everyone is impressed with Mollie’s running abilities, and Thijs deserves a lot of credit for his ability to set up a system that allows him to track his pet’s activity and share it with the world.
