Border Collies rank at the very top of the canine intelligence charts, and that brainpower is no accident.

This breed was shaped over centuries by shepherds who cared about one thing above all else: how good a dog was at its job.

If you share your home with one of these gorgeous dogs, or you simply admire them from afar, here are three facts that explain what makes the Border Collie so remarkably special.

1. They Are Officially the Smartest Dog Breed

When people call the Border Collie the smartest dog in the world, they're not exaggerating.

Guinness World Records lists the Border Collie as the most intelligent breed of dog, a title backed by research from Stanley Coren, a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia.

Coren polled 200 professional dog obedience judges to rank breeds by working and obedience intelligence, and the Border Collie came out on top, ahead of the poodle and the German shepherd.

Just how smart is that? Dogs at the top of Coren's scale can understand a vocabulary of roughly 250 words, which is about the same as a human toddler of two years old.

2. The Name Comes From the Land That Made Them

The Border Collie earned its name from geography and from plain hard work.

The breed took shape in the border country between Scotland and England, where the working collie became the most valuable asset a flock owner could have.

Without a tireless dog to manage them, the enormous flocks of sheep in that region simply couldn't have been handled.

The word "collie" carries its own history, too.

According to writer Iris Combe, in old Gaelic "collie" was a rural term for anything useful, so a "collie dog" was simply a useful dog.

Because the breed flourished in the border region, it became known as the Border Collie.

3. They Herd Sheep With Their Eyes

One of the Border Collie's most fascinating traits is the intense stare known as "the eye."

Rather than constantly barking or nipping at sheep, these dogs can control a flock with little more than their focused gaze, body language, and movement.

The dog will crouch low, stare intently at the sheep, and move in a controlled way to influence where the flock goes.

This distinctive working style is one reason Border Collies can seem almost hypnotic when they're focused on a task.

So the next time you watch a Border Collie fly through an agility course or lock eyes with a stray sheep, remember that you are looking at centuries of careful work rolled into one clever, tireless dog.

Whether one shares your couch or you just love spotting them out and about, the Border Collie is proof that a dog bred to be useful can also be an absolute joy to know.
