What are the Best Dog Stairs for Pets with Shorter Legs?

While my Schnoodles aren’t exactly small dogs, they are a little shorter than one might consider to be medium-sized. And as they get older and can’t launch themselves onto my bed with anything close to a modicum of dignity, it’s clear they need a little assistance. In short (no pun intended), I’m thinking stairs that are configured for dogs with slightly shorter legs are in order.
To be clear, I don’t mind lifting them up and onto the bed. However, my one pooch gets restless at night and, within 20 minutes, wants to jump down. It’s hard on her joints and is sleep-defying for me as she paces back and forth across my bed looking for that single sweet spot on the floor where she can comfortably land.
What to do? Everyone told me to buy a set of those soft dog steps so they can easily ascend and descend. Now, it sounds like a no-brainer, yet I kept hearing from other pet parents that their dogs refused to use them. For me, that means I’m about to start searching for something that isn’t too daunting for my gals to use.
Narrowing Down the Options
Was I looking for plush steps? Or something harder that might offer a greater sense of stability. Maybe a ramp or “ladder” style design? And did I want something I could fold up and tuck under the bed to save space? What about that sloped design that looks like a ramp/step combo? So many options.
For dogs unable to jump up but are still cool with stairs, one of the multi-step options might be the golden ticket. I’m thinking it might be a more natural transition for them than say a ramp.
For me, the EHEYCIGA Dog Stairs with an optional wider footprint is a great choice. The broader sizing is perfect for pets who may be hesitant about tackling this new, free-standing method of hopping up onto the bed or sofa. And because it comes in three-, four-, and five-step designs, it’s ideal for everything from low platform beds to sofas, and even today’s uber-thick, ultra-high mattress combos.
Now, if your pet is anxious about tackling steps, this Romrol slope stair may be just what you’re looking for. It’s a modified ramp design with a gentle, stepped approach resulting in a tighter footprint that takes up less floor space than a full, flat ramp. High-density foam construction with a non-slip tread makes it easy for your pet to grip and feel safe as they climb up and into bed for the night.
When hopping onto the sofa or bed isn’t a big issue for your pet but climbing up into your family’s SUV or Crossover becomes a struggle, you’re going to want to check out this Amazon Basics Foldable Non-Slip Steps. Durable plastic framing is perfect for use in any weather condition while carpeted, non-slip treads ensure your pet’s stability as they climb up and into your vehicle. And because it folds down for compact storage, you can stow it in your trunk or hatch with ease.
When space is an issue, versatility matters and this two-part Pettycare Dog Stair scores top points. Made from super-sturdy, high-density foam its lightweight design makes it easy to pick up and move anywhere in the house. Use the sloped, two-step format for quick access to the sofa, or stack the two components for a taller, four-step boost up onto the bed. And that cut-out cubby in the base is just calling the cat’s name.
Now, if you’re not convinced you’ll ever win your pooch over to using dog stairs, something like this PetSafe CozyUp Ramp may be the ideal solution. Not only is this bedside access ramp fully carpeted for easy gripping to provide your pet with an enhanced sense of safety, but it’s super-strong and capable of supporting up to 120 pounds. While it may take up a footprint larger than a set of dog stairs, it folds flat for easy, under-bed storage.
If your pet needs just a little lift, check out these low-rise ramp-style stairs by Topmart. What’s extra special about this set of lightweight dog access stairs is the extra-deep sizing for each step that gives your pet a little added stability and a better sense of traction.

Tips for Encouraging Your Pet to Use Dog Stairs or a Dog Access Ramp
Introducing dog stairs or a dog access ramp to your pet may be less optional and more out of necessity. I mean, not all dogs can jump up onto beds and not all owners have the strength to lift up a heftier dog.
Per the American Kennel Club (AKC), it’s important to keep the experience positive and plan on going the “rewards-based” route to encourage your pet to try them out.
Start by letting your pooch get used to this new “accessory” without any expectation of him. Drop a treat or two on the lower step or let him discover his favorite toy sitting on it. Then place a treat on the second step, and so on. Watch your dog ascend to the next step/treat and praise him for doing such a great job.
