When Cats Refuse to Say Cheese: A Cat Dad's Struggle

A Japanese cat dad set out for one lovely family portrait, only to watch his two feline models turn the moment into a miniature boxing match.

Yes, Chouchou and Miko have become internet favorites thanks to their elderly owner's travels that take him to some of the most scenic locations across Japan. Oh, and BTW, he always travels with the dueling duo in tow. Now, in most of his pix, he smiles broadly for the camera while the two white rescues are seen looking less than enthusiastic. But it appears that in this instance, things took a bit of a turn.

Yes, while many of his recent snaps captured shall we call it, total boredom, this particular shot caught the animosity that was simmering beneath. Maybe they were tired of the day, the photo ops, or one another... but a picture speaks a thousand words, as they say. You see, just as Dad was getting ready for another adorable photograph, Chouchou and Miko decided there was some unfinished business to be settled. While simply sitting side-by-side, the mood suddenly shifted, and within moments paws were flying as the cats swatted back and forth, neither appearing interested in surrendering.

Now, if you share your space with more than one feline, you already know how quickly an argy-bargy can flare up. Maybe not viscious and bloody, but certainly not a happy-to-see-you situation. For me, it's particularly contentious if they're in the same space, let alone on the same lap as these feisty felines appear to be.

So, that's when their dad quickly stepped in and separated the pair, ending the brief disagreement. The comedy only grew from there, because apparently, when it was time for another photograph, Chouchou and Miko sat calmly next to one another as if all was well in their worlds. After the family returned home that afternoon, their owner reportedly noted no further battles between the two. So, clearly, the scuffle had cleared the air!

Spontaneous feline drama has become a signature of these photo adventures. While Dad grins happily at the camera, the cats frequently serve up serious expressions, stare in completely different directions, or appear profoundly unconvinced that anyone needed another family portrait. Hmmm... sounds like teenagers!

Behind the grumpy faces is a cat dad with years of history. Chouchou, a white cat with a distinctive black tail, was rescued on October 17, 2016, and officially joined the family on January 30, 2021, according to information shared through the family's account. Miko, meanwhile, was born September 6, 2024, and represents the younger generation. The account name @catwolf0314 preserves a connection to Wolf, a beloved cat who, per the family's posts, lived roughly 18 years and nine months before passing on December 31, 2020.

Not every feline disagreement signals hatred, however. Cats can engage in play fighting or brief social disputes, and as a result, Chouchou and Miko's quick return to peace suggests one dramatic moment does not define their bond.
