Animal Shelters in NYC Hit Record Number of Pets, Suspend Intakes

Like animal shelters in other parts of the country that are overcrowded, those in New York City are desperate to find homes for the many pets who are up for adoption, including dogs, cats, and rabbits. The NYC shelters have hit record numbers of animals and are no longer able to take any others, so they put out a call for help. If you or someone you know are thinking about getting a pet, it’s worth seeing the many beautiful animals available at Animal Care Centers of New York City (ACC).

Record Number of Pets Are Up for Adoption in New York City Shelters

Risa Weinstock is the President and CEO of Animal Care Centers of NYC, and she said they have never hit a population of 1,000 animals before. The number of pets in need of homes in their shelter system, which has been around for 30 years, is unprecedented. Overflow rooms and backup crates are being used because they don’t have enough space.

One of the major problems is that too many people are returning their pets to the shelters. Often, pet owners claim that they can’t afford to keep their animals because of rising pet care costs and overall cost of living, so they give them up. But shelter staff can provide assistance, helping with food or veterinarian resources for pet parents in need so they can keep their pets rather than surrender them.

ACC shared news in July that they would no longer be able to take in any more animals because they already had over 1,000 of them to care for. Despite suspending intakes, they would still be able to take in animals in need of emergency care, as well as those dropped off by government agencies and those posing a public safety risk.

Want to Open Your Home to a Pet in Need?

Weinstock confirmed that animals are euthanized if they aren’t adopted and their condition deteriorates. If you are located in or near New York City, consider adopting or fostering to help these shelters.

Overcrowded shelters are found all over the country, and what’s also sad is that animals are spending more time in shelters before being adopted. So, if you want to get a new pet, adopt don’t shop, and save a life.
