Internet sensation, friend to the stars, and eCommerce mogul, what more could a dog want? A degree, of course!

Can a dog be ambitious?

If so, there’s a Pug named Doug out of Nashville who is single-handedly winning the charge on this front. Okay, maybe not single-handedly because pet parent Leslie Mosier has been helping with the keyboarding requirements and tweaking his social media savvy. Also, using the word “handedly” may not be appropriate given he’s not of the five-fingered variety… however I’m not sure “pawedly” would really work.

But I digress.

You see, it’s the famed Pug’s mug and that extensive wardrobe securing his well-earned leader-of-the-pack position as a social media influencer. Yes, those cute, flat-faced Pug features, with a lolling, pink tongue and outfits for every occasion give him that ever-changing, must-watch persona that social media devotees adore. So much so, that the 13-year-old Pug has over 15 million social media followers who tap in daily to watch his antics on Instagram and TikTok.

And it’s not just the internet that’s fascinated by the portly Pug. Doug has appeared in videos with Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, and John Legend as well as been interviewed on CNBC and even has a range of stuffed toys and books available on Amazon. A highlight for any dog has to be walking the red carpet at a CMT awards show while donning a sparkly golden Stetson and hanging with the Backstreet Boys. Doug did all of that while working the crowd like the self-assured little pro that he is.

So, it’s no wonder that a few years back, his net worth was estimated at a cool $3 mill… of course, all pets are priceless but it’s still a pretty impressive number.

Now this most recent accomplishment involves a diploma from the University of New Haven complete with an honorary degree bestowed on him in the area of “Furensic Science”. Mosier had been a regular at the university working with them on social media strategy, so how better to honor the topic at hand than to reward an actual media sensation – in this case, Doug?

Yes, the school and Mosier put their heads together to come up with an appropriate “area of study” for Doug and decided Furensic Science in line with one of the university's most renowned programs, Forensic Science.

No surprise the youthful audience of fellow graduates went crazy when Doug’s name was announced and the popular pup arrived on stage sporting the standard robe and mortarboard cap. Per his mom Mosier, "Students were thrilled and began asking for more Doug. The university, always in tune with its student body, saw this as the perfect chance to create a fun and memorable moment."

What’s next for this over-achiever? Maybe his own talk show, clothing line, advice column…

It's Genetic! Why Some Cats Are Naturally Louder

Have you ever wondered what makes one cat a super chatty communicator and another a silent observer? If so, you’re not alone! New research is now shedding light on this, and their findings suggest that the answer may be deeply embedded in their genes.A study led by wildlife researcher Yume Okamoto and his team at Kyoto University in Japan explored the impact of genetics on feline vocalizations. The researcher asked cat owners in Japan to complete a questionnaire about their pets’ behavior, including purring and meowing directed at humans. At the same time, they collected DNA samples from the cats through a simple cheek swab.To understand the findings of this study, we need to start with an understanding of a specific gene found on the X chromosome: the androgen receptor (AR) gene. This gene plays a key role in the body’s response to hormones like testosterone.What’s particularly interesting about the AR gene is a section within it where a DNA sequence is repeated. The number of repetitions directly influences how responsive the gene is – fewer repetitions mean the receptor is more sensitive to androgen, while more repetitions mean the receptor is less sensitive. Why is this relevant? In previous studies, shorter repeats in the AR gene of other species (including humans and dogs) have been linked to increased aggression and extroverted behavior.To determine whether this connection also exists in cats, the team analyzed survey and DNA results from 280 spayed or neutered cats.They found that cats with the shorter AR gene variant were reported to purr more frequently. Additionally, male cats with this variant scored higher for vocalizations directed at their people, such as meowing to signal they wanted food or to be let outside. Meanwhile, female cats with the same genotype showed more aggression towards strangers.However, cats with the longer, less active version of the AR gene tended to be quieter. The team noted that this longer variant was more prevalent in pedigree breeds, which are often selectively bred for more docile and calmer temperaments.Not only does this information shine a light on the role genetics plays in a cat’s personality, but it also provides a better understanding of the impact being domesticated has had on our feline friends.While it’s generally believed that domestication has led to more chatty behavior in our cats, the study revealed that the gene variant associated with more vocal communication and assertiveness was also found in wild cats, such as the lynx. The team hypothesized that this was because certain traits, such as assertiveness, may be passed on from generation to generation, especially in environments where resources are scarce or competition is high, to give cats a competitive edge. After all, living alongside humans doesn’t always lead to calm and gentle animals. Sometimes a little “pushiness” pays off!What does this mean for us, as cat parents? Understanding that some of your cat’s chattiness or more assertive behaviors may be due to genetics can help us better appreciate their one-of-a-kind personalities. Of course, to make this feel like a safe place they can turn to, there are a few factors you will need to consider, including the actual setup of the space and the training required to help create a positive association with it. So, let’s look at those two key elements in more detail… Creating the Ideal Safe Space To set up the ideal safe space for your dog, you must carefully consider several factors, from location and comfort to gradual introduction and positive reinforcement. The following guidelines will help you provide your pup with a secure and calming getaway. Location, Location, Location When setting up your dog’s space, location is key. Consider your dog’s personality and preferences. Some dogs will feel safer in a space that is closer to their person, while others would be happier tucked away somewhere secluded on their own. Ideal spots are often quiet corners, back rooms, or even closets. The goal is to find a naturally secluded area away from your home’s highest-traffic zones. Your dog may prefer enclosed spaces with a door or flap that cuts them off from the rest of the world. Alternatively, they may feel more comfortable in an open area. Pay attention to your dog’s natural hiding spots for clues as to what will make them feel most secure. The Atlantic hurricane season is almost upon us, and forecasts warn we’ll likely see more storms than average. The storm season officially starts on June 1 and lasts till November 30, but storms may also occur before or after these dates.Last year’s hurricane season has devastated communities with flooding, mudslides, and wind, causing billions of dollars in damage and leaving thousands of people without a home. According to the American Veterinary Association, 45.5% of U.S. households own at least one dog, and 32.1% have at least one cat. An estimated 89.7 million dogs and 73.8 million cats are kept as pets in the United States, and all of them face the same risks during the hurricane season as their owners. The United States Department of Homeland Security has created a website to help people prepare for natural disasters and emergencies. There you can find a list of items people should have prepared in case of an emergency. A basic disaster supply kit should contain food, water, flashlights, cash, personal hygiene items, cell phone chargers, and prescription medication, among other things. But what about our dogs and cats? Is there any way to include them in your family’s emergency plan, and if you have to evacuate, can they be taken to safety as well?“Sometimes it’s much more challenging to get certain things when you’re in a hurry,” said Sarah Cortright, a Southern California-based small animal veterinarian. Packing a pet’s vaccination records, medication, food, and other necessities is much harder when trying to escape a deadly storm. It’s essential to have all these things prepared. Make sure you have at least two weeks' worth of your pet’s prescription medication in case you are forced to stay away from home for an extended period. Remember that veterinary offices may also stay closed because of severe weather, making it impossible to refill prescriptions quickly or obtain your pet’s vaccination or medical records.“Coming out of L.A. fires, we saw a lot of pets that needed medications, and they had no documentation,” making it difficult for veterinarians to refill scripts, explained Cortright. She advises keeping a copy of your pet’s medical and vaccination records digitally and on paper.“Even if it’s just a picture of the records on your phone, that’s enough,” she said, adding that animals may be separated from their families and boarded in separate facilities, for which they’ll need proof of vaccination. If you haven’t microchipped your pet yet, make sure to do so before the hurricane season. Keep your contact information up to date. In case you lose your pet during the storm, a microchip can help reunite you with your four-legged companion.Cortright suggests packing a carrier for each cat and a small dog, and a leash or a harness for medium and large-sized pooches. Pack as much food and water for your pets as you can carry, as well as food and water bowls. If possible, take their bedding and a couple of toys as well. Bring some litter for cats so they have a place to relieve themselves, and waste bags for dogs.Take recent photos of your pets to help with identification in case they get lost, and make sure they have ID tags and collars. This can make cleanup a little more challenging as there are no easy clumps to remove. However, for young kittens, cats with PICA, or homes with dogs who may get into the box, the lack of clumping makes it a safer option that is less likely to cause a life-threatening blockage if consumed. It's worth noting that when choosing a clay litter, there are different textures, ranging from fine, sand-like litter to coarser particles. Some cats will have strong preferences related to texture, so pay attention to their digging and covering habits. Another variation that could turn your cat off is scented litter. While these scents may help mask odors, we must remember that our cats have a stronger sense of smell and are more sensitive to scents like these. It’s also incredibly lightweight, making it easy to carry, handle, and pour. Because the litter absorbs moisture so effectively, you can go longer between full litter box changes. While it may seem that fewer litter box changes would translate to considerable cost savings, this, unfortunately, isn’t the case due to the higher upfront costs. Some cats may also find the texture of the crystals or the slight crunching sound they make when stepped on to be uncomfortable or bothersome, which could turn them off using the box. My overly sensitive cat Pippen refuses to step on any form of silica gel litters I have tried in the past.
