Fall Activities for Dogs!

With cooler temperatures, this is the best time of year to take the pooch for a long walk, engage in outdoor activity, or simply snuggle in at home.

Autumn’s right around the corner, and in addition to falling leaves, Hallowe’en and pumpkin-flavored everything, it’s a great time to intro some fun activities for you and your pet to enjoy together. Not only have temperatures dropped to a cooler, more comfortable level for high-energy shenanigans, but a whole new batch of sights, sounds, and smells is in the air as summer turns to fall.

So, let’s break from the same old routine and chase something a little different that you can share with your dog. Such as:

  • try a scavenger hunt in your own backyard. Favorite treats and toys hidden inside all those piles of leaves or tucked under now-bare shrubs can keep an eager dog busy for hours – particularly if those items are heavily scented and well hidden.
  • venture out into rural areas for a walk along a forested lane where simply chasing leaves and errant squirrels can tire out even the most enthusiastic pooch.
  • check out the dog-friendly farmer’s markets – both rural and urban – where new sounds and the smell of fresh-baked pies and ciders all add to your dog’s sensory stimulation.
  • pull out the slow-cooker and whip up a batch of favorite comfort foods that can be shared with your four-legged buddy. Or bake up something like this chicken and vegetable casserole. Delicious smells and high anticipation… the perfect way to wind down a brisk fall day.
  • scout out the various pumpkin patches and corn mazes outside of town. Many are pet-friendly and it’s a great way to change up the usual walking route for something fun, challenging, and totally different.
  • do you love to bake? Time to break out the cookie sheets and prep some tasty Fall-inspired treats like these soft pumpkin cookies for older dogs/those with dental issues, these crispy pumpkin and cheese snacks or a batch of super-tasty pumpkin-molasses dog cookies.
  • set up an easy, outdoor agility course. Those lower temps are perfect for a high-energy dog that craves for praise. Such a great way to keep your pooch physically fit, mentally stimulated, and feeling the love.

Rain day? No problem. There are always rainy days when autumn strikes, and the fun doesn’t have to end just because you’re stuck indoors.

  • grab the popcorn, blankets, and plan to snuggle in for an afternoon of binge-watching your favorite streaming channel… with the doggo curled up beside you.
  • plan an indoor treasure hunt with high-value treats your pooch can hunt down and devour.
  • if your dog’s a little more active and less inclined to snuggle till he’s tired out, check out this indoor Chuckit! ball that’s plush, durable, and lightweight enough that it won’t knock over table lamps or flat-screens. Perfect for a modified game of fetch or hide-and-seek.
