1. Rubber and plastic toys

These types of toys are the easiest to clean and also the most durable.

How to clean:

  • Soak in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water for 15 minutes.
  • Scrub with an old toothbrush or scrub brush to remove grime.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Air dry completely before returning it to your dog.

2. Plush and fabric toys

Soft toys absorb slobber, dust, and can even collect mites so giving them a good clean is essential.

How to clean:

  • Check the label for machine-wash instructions.
  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle using a mild, fragrance-free detergent or baking soda and white vinegar for a natural option.
  • Air dry or use a dryer on low heat (if it's safe to).

3. Rope toys

Rope toys can be especially prone to bacteria!

How to clean:

  • Soak in warm water with white vinegar or pet-safe disinfectant.
  • Microwave damp (not dry) rope toys for 1 minute to kill off bacteria, but only if the toy has no plastic or metal parts. Give your microwave a thorough clean afterwards!
  • Dry thoroughly to prevent mold from growing.

 4. Treat-dispensing and puzzle toys

These often have hidden nooks that trap food.

How to clean:

  • Disassemble the toy, if possible.
  • Soak it in warm soapy water or vinegar-water solution.
  • Use a brush or pipe cleaner for crevices.
  • Rinse and dry completely before reuse.

General dog toy cleaning tips

  • Frequency: Clean toys at least once a week or more often for frequently used ones.
  • Rotate toys: Give your dog a few toys at a time and rotate them regularly.
  • Inspect toys: Keep an eye out for damage or small parts that could become choking hazards.
