New British PM Andy Burnham Not Bringing His Rescue Dog to 10 Downing

Once again, Larry the Cat claims the primo pet spot at the prestigious address, as he welcomes his seventh PM... but not the dog!

Completely unperturbed by the rotating door that is his home, Larry the Cat has not only retained his primo feline status but actually displaced a potential newcomer’s position. You see, Larry, who we’ve reported on before, is preparing to welcome his next human. And that is one Andy Burnham, who just recently joined the household at 10 Downing Street. Oh, and in addition to being Larry’s go-to when treats run low, he also runs the United Kingdom.

Now Burnham and his wife adopted their rescue dog named Axel close to a decade ago. So, he’s well established in the Burnham household and clearly loved by his humans because a very tough call was made. And that was to leave the wee but feisty Bichon Frise-cross back home in more familiar surroundings, that being the North of England.

Truth be told, the newbie PM admitted that he feared Axel “wouldn’t get on with Larry”, and for that reason they felt it might be safer (my word, not theirs) to permit the Famous Axel, as he’s affectionately referred to, to keep his distance. I believe the exact wording was, “I think he’s going to have to stay up north, I think, because he’s kind of got that angry little man thing going on. He’s got a bit of poodle in him. And, yeah, he wouldn’t get on with Larry, let me put it that way, and I don’t think the nation would thank me, would they, if I brought Axel down to disturb Larry’s world?”

Now, two of my dogs are Schnoodles, meaning they both have a good dose of that “poodle thing” in them, and for poodles all over the world, I do take exception to his implying that this is what made angry Axel gnarly in any way, shape, or form. That said, we do know our dogs, and it’s probably best that he keeps Famous Axel away from 10 Downing and out of Larry’s way. Lest there be a full-on argy-bargy that would have the press immediately racing to their social media feeds to spill the beans on this ill-fated pairing. Perhaps precipitous, perhaps not.

But if Burnham can read the signals his nation of new constituents will soon be sending as clearly as he picked up on the potential tension between Larry the Cat and Famous Axel, then we’re feeling this feline may just be able to let his guard down and welcome this most recent (albeit temporary) landlord into his impressive home.
