Nom Nom has introduced a fresh-frozen dog food that makes portion control easy. Full meal or topper? You decide.

Fresh-frozen dog food has been in the pet aisle for years. And if you walk the freezer section at PetSmart, you'll find a broad range of brands, recipes, and portion sizes. Pet parents love that when you thaw a portion of this highly popular healthy food option, you can actually see the individual ingredients: real meat and vegetables that still look like real meat and vegetables, rather than a uniform paste. And the Nom Nom brand that has been available at PetSmart since 2022, has now added a more flexible format; fresh-frozen meal clusters.

Wondering what all those crouton-sized nuggets are all about? They're actually healthy, fresh-frozen food bits that Nom Nom calls Nombles. They pour loose from a resealable bag, so you can scoop out the amount you want, press the air out, reseal, and return the rest to the freezer. Thaw a scooped portion for just 15 minutes and serve it as a complete meal, a topper, or an anytime treat. And if your household is like mine, toppers are absolute "gold" to my fur crew.

What I love is that there are two recipes: Chicken & Sweet Potato and Beef & Potato. Both are made with real proteins and vegetables, prepared in small batches, and developed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Both are complete and balanced to AAFCO standards for all life stages, from puppyhood through the senior years, meaning either can serve as your dog's entire diet.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials publishes nutrient profiles a food must meet to qualify as a full diet, and the all-life-stages standard is the more demanding one because it covers growth and reproduction.

Now, when introducing any new food to your pet, transition it in slowly. Mix a small number of clusters into your dog's current food, then increase the proportion over the next seven days. Monitor stool quality along the way, and check with your veterinarian first if your dog eats a prescription diet.

Once the switch is complete, portion by weight and activity level using the guidance on each product page. Scoopable portioning is perfect for multi-dog homes, schedules that shift day to day, and for travel or boarding. Best of all, once thawed, these clusters also work in a puzzle feeder or lick mat.
