When she’s out for her daily constitutional or is touring the dog park, she’s fine. Running and exploring appears to be her outdoor passion. It seems there can be several reasons my Miniature Schnauzer prefers to avoid hard surface flooring and the most common causes could be:Medical issues including loss of vision, hip dysplasia or arthritis make gripping a hard, slippery surface feel treacherous. This is great in the summer months but can make it challenging to keep your best friend comfortable during the colder temperatures of the winter. A healthy cat is happies in temperatures between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. During the cooler months, an adult cat can adjust comfortably to temperatures as low as 59 degrees Fahrenheit. This isn’t to say your cat can’t enjoy some on-leash time exploring the ice and snow. My one cat, Pippen, adores playing in the snow. But it’s our responsibility as cat parents to keep an eye on the temperatures and limit their time outdoors when it could be unsafe. Offer Warm and Cozy Bedding One of the easiest ways to keep your cat comfortable is by offering extra bedding to allow them to snuggle in and create a cozy place to nap. There are several great options to consider, depending on your cat’s personal preference. Donut style beds have higher sides, like a warm hug. There are two options to consider, depending on the availability of nearby sockets and your personal preferences/comfort level. The first is a typical plug-in heated bed similar to heated blankets and mattress covers used on our own beds. These heated beds have controls giving you the ability to easily change the temperature to suit your cat’s needs. They can also be set to turn off after a specified time to avoid the bed becoming too warm or drawing too much power. An alternative is to use a self-heated design. Self-heated beds and cat mats reflect your cat’s own body heat when they are lying on them. This creates a warm, heated sleeping spot without the need for electricity. Not only are these great for locations with no available nearby socket, but they are also the perfect solution for cats who tend to chew electrical cords.

You may notice your dog is panting excessively, pacing, trembling, or whining. Many anxious dogs will also hide or seek constant reassurance from their people. Some dogs will even display destructive behavior, like digging and chewing. Subtle cues like lip licking, yawning, and “whale eye” (showing the whites of their eyes) are also signs of underlying fear and anxiety. Not only is anxiety an uncomfortable situation in the moment, but chronic or prolonged anxiety can lead to a long list of health problems and a diminished quality of life. When dogs experience stress, their bodies release hormones like cortisol, which, over time, can weaken the immune system, upset their sleep patterns, and contribute to gastrointestinal problems. Think of it as their personal sanctuary, a place they can go when they need to decompress and feel safe. Think of the average teen or pre-teen child and the importance of their bedroom. When they are feeling angry, upset, or frustrated with anything happening at school or home, that’s the space they usually run to (often accompanied by slamming the door). This is the equivalent for your pup. Your dog’s safe space could be a quiet corner of a room, a rarely used room like a guest room, den, or even their crate. One common misconception is that creating a safe space is a form of punishing or isolating your dog. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This special area shouldn’t be seen as a punishment. It’s a positive and comforting retreat. A safe space is a tool to empower your dog to manage their anxiety, not to confine them. In fact, more often than not, their ability to move about the house isn’t restricted in any way. Instead, it's a place where they can voluntarily seek comfort, a haven where they can feel secure and protected. Of course, to make this feel like a safe place they can turn to, there are a few factors you will need to consider, including the actual setup of the space and the training required to help create a positive association with it. So, let’s look at those two key elements in more detail… Creating the Ideal Safe Space To set up the ideal safe space for your dog, you must carefully consider several factors, from location and comfort to gradual introduction and positive reinforcement. The following guidelines will help you provide your pup with a secure and calming getaway. Location, Location, Location When setting up your dog’s space, location is key. Consider your dog’s personality and preferences. Some dogs will feel safer in a space that is closer to their person, while others would be happier tucked away somewhere secluded on their own. Ideal spots are often quiet corners, back rooms, or even closets. The goal is to find a naturally secluded area away from your home’s highest-traffic zones. Your dog may prefer enclosed spaces with a door or flap that cuts them off from the rest of the world. Alternatively, they may feel more comfortable in an open area. Pay attention to your dog’s natural hiding spots for clues as to what will make them feel most secure. The Right Bed or Crate A comfortable bed or crate should be the central feature of this safe space. Size, material, and placement are all factors to consider. The bed or crate should allow your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Consider whether soft, plush materials or a firm, supportive surface best suits your dog’s preferences. If you’re using a crate to build out this space, you’ll need to choose between a more open or closed crate design. Open crates offer security while allowing your dog to still see what’s going on around them. Closed crates create a more secluded spot. If you currently have an open crate but feel your dog would benefit from a closed design, you can easily transform it with a crate cover or even just a blanket draped over the top.

The sooner you get your pet to a vet, the sooner they can identify the underlying cause.Loss of consciousness or difficulty waking up: While mild lethargy is likely the result of a little added stress and activity, if your pet is unresponsive or cannot be roused, this is likely something more serious.Severe bleeding: A minor cut can be treated at home. It happens when a dog protects a resource they see as valuable from a perceived threat. This is a deeply rooted survival instinct, ensuring they have access to the resources needed to meet their basic needs. While this describes the reason for the behavior, it can become problematic if it escalates to aggression.Common triggers for resource guarding include food, toys, bones, bedding, and specific locations within the home. Dogs may also guard people, especially “their person.”The intensity of resource guarding can vary wildly. Some dogs will exhibit mild displays of possessiveness. Mild resource guarding may involve growling, snapping, or posturing when a person or other animal approaches the resource.However, others will display severe aggression to protect what they see as theirs. This can involve aggressive biting and can pose a serious risk to others. Recognizing the signs of resource guarding and taking appropriate steps to address the issue before it escalates is crucial.Preventing and Managing Toy AggressionOnce you have identified that your dog is exhibiting toy aggression, it’s time to take proactive steps to prevent and manage this behavior. After all, we all want to create a safe and happy living environment for our dogs and the rest of the family. The earlier you address the issue, the easier it will be to modify your dog’s behavior.In the following sections, I’ll offer strategies and techniques to help you prevent and manage toy aggression that I have learned over my many years fostering rescue dogs. By understanding the underlying reasons for this behavior, managing the behavior to prevent trouble short-term, and training for long-term success, you can effectively address this common problem.Early Socialization and TrainingOne of the most effective ways to prevent resource guarding is through early socialization and training, which is excellent news if you’re bringing a young puppy home!Expose your young pup to various people, animals, and environments from a young age. This will help them develop positive associations with different triggers and situations, ultimately reducing their fear and anxiety. It will help them be more comfortable in unknown situations instead of making them feel like they have to step up and protect themselves and their treasured belongings.Positive Reinforcement TechniquesChoosing the right approach to training is almost as important as the training process itself. Positive reinforcement is a powerful training method that rewards desired behaviors and creates positive associations.When your dog displays calm and relaxed behavior around their toys, reward them with treats, praise, or playtime. In time, your dog will begin associating sharing with positive things, reducing the likelihood of aggressive behavior.Why specifically positive reinforcement? Punishing or scolding your dog for guarding their toys can escalate their anxiety, making the problem worse.Basic Obedience CommandsIn addition to focusing on training specifically related to your dog’s resource guarding behaviors, you should continue working on obedience training. Many basic commands, such as “drop it” and “leave it,” will help you manage these situations.Throughout this training, the goal is to convince your dog to trade for something better. Practice these commands regularly, starting with having your dog leave low-value items in exchange for treats. As they show they are more willing to make the trade, gradually progress to higher-value items like toys.You can effectively prevent and manage their resource guarding by teaching your dog to hand over or drop items on cue.Desensitization and CounterconditioningAn extension of your dog’s training, desensitization and counterconditioning are powerful techniques used to help your dog overcome their fear and anxiety. As these feelings can trigger resource guarding or make a situation involving resource guarding even worse, they are important to acknowledge and address.If you have a dog who can share with others in some situations and not others, you will need to find the reason why. If your dog is in a situation where they are feeling fearful, they are more likely to try to feel the need to protect their belongings. These techniques involve gradually exposing your dog to their triggers while maintaining a calm and relaxed environment. These exposures are paired with positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, to create positive associations and teach them that the trigger does not need to be feared.For example, if you have a small dog afraid of large dogs, you may start by standing across a field from larger dogs while rewarding your dog for staying calm. Over time, you can slowly close the gap between them while praising and rewarding them for calm behavior. Eventually, your dog will be able to be close to larger dogs without feeling nervous or afraid because the emotions they feel when seeing them have been rewired – feeling excitement for the rewards they know they will receive instead of fear.When you have successfully worked through this process, your dog will no longer feel the need to guard their toys just because a larger dog comes near.Try Calming Products to Reduce Anxiety For dogs who experience heightened anxiety or stress, calming products can help them feel more relaxed temporarily while you work toward a longer-term solution. Calming treats infused with natural ingredients like chamomile or valerian root can help soothe your dog and promote relaxation. Study Reveals Dogs Understand Us Better if We Speak Slower

Are you trying to train your pup but feel like there is a communication breakdown? Do you worry that the language barrier could keep you from connecting and allowing you to be on the same page? While there is still a lot of study being done about how much of our spoken languages a dog can understand (or even speak with the rise of the talking buttons), a new study has revealed that the speed you speak may have a direct impact on their ability to comprehend what you are asking. The study was conducted by Eloise Deaux and her colleagues out of the University of Geneva in Switzerland. They analyzed the vocal sounds of 30 dogs and 27 humans across five languages, tracking their speech rate and the corresponding brain responses. It revealed that humans and dogs connect and respond best to very different speech tempos. In analyzing the neural responses of the two, the researchers found that dogs focus on slower rhythms while humans focus more when the rhythm is faster. As a result of this, humans generally talk much faster than their canine counterparts. According to the research, the average human speech rate is approximately four syllables per second. In comparison, the dogs studied would bark, whine, and growl at an average rate of two vocalizations per second. “What’s further interesting,” the authors of the study wrote, “is that while dogs use slow rhythm to process speech and contrary to popular beliefs, they need both content and prosody to successfully comprehend it.” ( Prosody: The rhythm, melody, and intonation used in speech and language. This refers to the speed at which you speak and the changing tone of your voice throughout your conversation.)What does this mean for you as a dog parent? Changing the speed at which you’re speaking isn’t going to magically make your dog understand your spoken language. Although, we wish it would. How much easier would it be if our dogs could understand us or reply with clear, vocal answers? It would solve SO many challenges we face in our lives together! However, understanding how your dog processes vocal communication can help you better connect with them by adjusting your speech to set our canine companions up for success. Whether you are trying to teach a new puppy basic obedience skills like sit, stay, and down or working on more advanced trick training, you can improve your chances of success by speaking slower when giving commands. The next time you kick off a training session, take a moment to take a deep breath and ensure you feel calm and relaxed. Trying to work with your dog when you are highly stressed or anxious not only increases the chance that you will feel frustrated if they are struggling to pick something up, but it can also cause you to speak faster, further reducing the chance your dog is going to understand what you are asking of them.
