We’ve all heard the expression “not all heroes wear capes”. Typically, it’s used when referring to those amazing search and rescue dogs that step in to help when humans have come up short.

Now, to be honest, I think we typically associate those cape-free heroes with some of the larger, more majestic-looking breeds such as German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Belgian Malinois, Huskies, and the like. Maybe it’s a Lassie or a Rin-Tin-Tin syndrome that has us immediately visualizing breeds with bold, movie-star good looks and an athletic, almost statuesque presence racing in to perform a dangerous rescue.

But in this particular instance, it was an older, rather paunchy Pyrenees named Buford who strolled his way over and earned hero status. And it all fell into play when a two-year-old child went missing seven miles away from Buford’s family ranch.

Back in Seligman, Arizona, where the child disappeared, sweltering desert conditions and rugged terrain were making the search difficult for the dozens of volunteers who had worked through the night. When a Sheriff’s helicopter spotted two Mountain Lions in the vicinity the toddler had gone missing, the search became all the more urgent.

Now seven miles away, Buford’s owner, Scotty Dunton was just heading into town from his ranch. Located in a remote section of the sweltering Arizona desert, Dunton had learned of the missing child and was already thinking that the area’s heat, thick forests, mountains and canyons were not “very friendly” to a small child. Gulp!

What he didn’t know was that things were about to change. As he drove his pickup down the driveway early that morning, there was Buford. But he wasn’t alone. He had a tiny toddler in tow. He was disoriented and crying, but Dunton was able to determine that the little guy had lain down under a tree before hero Buford found him and led him back to the ranch. Tiny footprints led back over a mile and corroborated the toddler’s story.

Now, Buford’s job on the ranch is night patrol, where he’s charged with keeping the coyotes away. So, it made sense that he would have been out in the wee hours of the morning, walking the grounds and looking for something to do. And boy, did he find something to do.

Unharmed and slightly dehydrated after a rugged six-mile trek, it’s hard to know if the child would have had the wherewithal to continue walking toward the ranch. But help arrived in the form of a furry, heavyset and hard-working dog named Buford. One who earned himself hero status that day… and a two-pound ribeye steak for dinner that night from Dunton.
