Weird Things Your Cat Might Be Doing to Get Your Attention

Cats are often described as independent, but if you live with one, you know that’s not the whole story. When they want your attention, they can be surprisingly persistent—and sometimes a little weird about it.

Here are a few common (and not-so-common) things your cat might do when they’re trying to get you to focus on them.

1. Knocking Objects to the Floor

That pen on your desk? The glass of water you just set down? Many cats discover early on that pushing things off surfaces is a guaranteed way to get a reaction.

For them, the outcome isn’t about destruction, it’s about getting you to stop what you’re doing and look their way.

2. The Silent Stare

Some cats use prolonged eye contact as a communication tool. They’ll sit at a distance, lock eyes, and simply wait. It’s often their way of asking for food, play, or interaction.

3. Bringing You “Gifts”

From toy mice to the occasional bug, cats sometimes deliver offerings to their humans. While the delivery may feel odd or even inconvenient, this behavior often comes from an instinct to share resources and connect.

4. Interrupting Your Sleep

Middle-of-the-night zoomies or paw taps on your face aren’t random bursts of chaos. Cats are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), and if they’ve learned that a little night-time activity gets you out of bed, they’ll repeat it.

5. Turning Their Back on You

It may look like they’re just ignoring you, but when a cat sits with their back facing you, it’s sometimes a subtle form of protest, showing you they’ve noticed your lack of attention.
