There are plenty of great store-bought toys out there, but some of the most stimulating and satisfying playthings for your feline friend can actually be crafted right at home, with minimal effort and common household items.

Here are three fun, easy, and safe DIY cat toys you can make in a matter of minutes.

1. Toilet paper roll puzzle toy

What you need:

  • Empty toilet paper roll
  • Scissors
  • Treats or dry cat food

How to make it:

Cut small holes (about the size of a pea) randomly around the roll. Make sure the holes are just big enough for a treat to fall through with some shaking. Fill the roll with a few of your cat’s favorite treats or kibble, then fold both ends of the roll inward to close it.

2. Sock and catnip kicker toy

What you need:

  • An old clean sock (preferably a long one)
  • Cotton stuffing or fabric scraps
  • Dried catnip
  • A bit of string or ribbon

How to make it:

Stuff the sock with a mix of soft filling and a generous pinch of dried catnip. Tie the open end with string or knot it tightly. If you want, sew it closed to make it extra durable.

What you need:

  • A stick or wooden dowel
  • String or yarn
  • Feathers, ribbons, or small bells

How to make it:

Tie a piece of string to one end of the stick. At the other end of the string, attach feathers, ribbon, or small bells using knots or hot glue. Make sure everything is securely fastened to prevent choking hazards!
