In a move that has shocked dog enthusiasts from across North America, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is being called out by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) who ask that the organization, renowned for supporting established pure-breed standards for over 140 years, abandon their backing of the breed requirements related to French bulldogs, Pugs, Dachshunds, and the Chinese Shar Pei.

Citing that AKC’s official breed standards for these dogs provides a “blueprint for the breeding of deformed, unhealthy dogs”, PETA zeroed in on health issues related to breathing (both Pugs and French bulldogs are brachycephalic) and a propensity for eye injury due to the Pug’s required standard of prominent, globular-shaped eyes. With the Chinese Shar-Pei, the requirement that the dog be covered in “profuse” wrinkles can result in frequent skin infections if not kept scrupulously clean, as well as painful ocular infections, including Entropion, where the heavy folding causes the eyelid to turn in. With the Dachshund breed, it’s the elongated back that’s so prone to injury that PETA flags as unacceptable.

Now, this is not the first time the two groups have battled over the treatment of animals. In the past, PETA, who oppose dog breeding in general, has compared the AKC to the KKK in that it rejects the melting pot philosophy in place of its pure-breed standards.

For this round, AKC hits back by clarifying that the standards for each breed are established by individual breed clubs, which the organization then reviews, approves and promotes. They do not set the standards and “categorically reject PETA’s mischaracterizations” of the requirements set out for various breeds. Once established, those approved by AKC reflect “decades of collaboration with veterinary experts and breeders.”

In fact, together with several of the breed clubs also donating and participating in dog health research, AKC advises that over the past 30 years, the organization has donated over $40 million to their canine health research charity.

They further comment that “the health, heritage and well-being of purebred dogs” is their top priority and that responsibly bred dogs that conform to the standards are, in fact, healthy.

What lies down the line? PETA is suing the AKC in a bid to force it to no longer support the established standards for the French bulldog, Pug, Dachshund, and Chinese Shar Pei. While it’s not a new fight for either group, it should be an interesting one now that emotions are starting to factor in.
