There are few things as heartwarming online as a heartwarming pet video, and the internet has once again delivered. This time, it comes in the form of a viral video featuring a rescue dog named Cactus and his irresistible way of demanding cuddles from his dog dad.

The short clip was posted by user @cactustherescue and has quickly earned nearly 80,000 likes on Instagram and over 81,000 likes on TikTok. It proves just how much a simple act of affection can resonate deeply with an audience of pet lovers.

Since capturing the hearts of thousands of pet lovers, it caught the attention of online publications and news platforms, including Yahoo, AOL, DogTime, and more.

With a look of determination on his face and the charm of his adorable puppy eyes, he approaches his dad, pawing gently at him as if asking for something. Eventually, after a little persuasion, he falls back into the cuddle position with his head against his dad’s, melting hearts around the world.

The caption reveals that this isn’t a one-time occurrence with Cactus.

“Sometimes Cactus comes up to me and gives me a look and I instantly know he wants something. I couldn’t figure out what it was this time until he fell back into cuddle position,” his dad shared.

Almost as heartwarming as the video is the overwhelming response it has received. If you have ever doubted the power of the human-animal bond, these comments are the perfect reminder!

“If one believes in fate or destiny it is clear this loving devoted soul was meant to be connected to you. The only thing that divides you is his inability to speak in our language and tell you how much love he has for you. But if you listen and watch, he tells you with every look, kiss and touch,” one user wrote.

It’s easy to forget sometimes that communication can take many forms. This video is the perfect reminder that while our dogs can’t speak English, they have found many ways to communicate their love and affection with us daily if we learn how to listen.

Here are a few tips to help “listen” to your dog more effectively:

  • Watch your dog’s tail. A high, fast tail wag often indicates excitement, while a low, sow tail wag might signal anxiety or uncertainty. If your dog’s tail is tucked, it usually means they are afraid.
  • Pay attention to their posture. A stiff, tense body might signal fear or aggression, while a relaxed posture with a loose body communicates that they are comfortable.
  • Is your dog making eye contact? Soft, relaxed eye contact can be a sign of affection.
  • While your dog can’t speak our language, they do speak. Whining, growling, yipping, or even sighing are all forms of communication.

The best way to read your dog’s body language is to consider the overall situation and combine multiple signals. For example, a wagging tail paired with a stiff body posture in a vet’s office is likely a sign of anxiety, not joy. Meanwhile, that same wagging tail at the front door with a happy “yip” as you return home from work is full of excitement and anticipation.

Each dog has their own way of communicating. The more time you spend with your dog, the better you understand their language, and the stronger your bond will be!
