It’s the photobomb of all bombs. A pooch, frozen in time, appears to be snoozing away behind a tourist who just wanted to grab a selfie with China’s famed Yangtze River in the background. Considered the third longest river in the world, it’s no surprise that Shanghai resident Guo Qingshan would want to use the well-situated lookout – the one with that expansive view of the majestic river and surrounding vista - for his “money” shot. I mean, who could resist?

But it was after the photo was taken, he’d returned home, and was sorting through the various pictures from his vacation, that he spotted the sleepy interloper.

Yes, nestled perfectly into the side of the famed Zigui Mountain, almost lapping at the edge of the Yangtze River, is the very distinct image of a dog.

So, like any of us would do, Guo posted the snap onto his Chinese social media accounts and received over 120,000 likes in just over a week. Nice, right? Then it hit Weibo (the Chinese equivalent to X or Instagram) and simply blew up. Suddenly it had millions of views and plenty of comments. “The puppy’s posture is like it’s drinking water, or it’s looking at some fish. It also looks like it’s quietly protecting the Yangtze River," Guo had stated. And followers immediately agreed, spotting the unmistakable likeness of a resting pooch. Soon after, they started to share and comment on the shot.

And this is where the fun begins. Because, of course, every pet parent recognizes their pooch in the sleepy granite profile. And also of course, they simply have to post pictures of their dogs in a similar resting position, in a bid to see whose mutt most closely resembles the gentle giant on the mountainside. With the light granite rimming his eyes, I see an older dog. Maybe a Bernese Mountain Dog, Golden Retriever, or Akita. What do you see?

Now dubbed “Puppy Mountain” (Xiaohongshu in Chinese) it’s becoming a bit of a tourist mecca for pet owners near and far. And of course, the perfect photo op for those who travel to the site with their own dogs.

Locals and past visitors have commented that it wasn’t until Guo pointed out the obvious, that they took a second look at their own pictures and realized the sleepy pooch was always there, quietly waiting for someone to notice him. Like all good dogs.
